After how many years, we wont have A "I Love my Dublin 4 type Rugger Bugger in charge".
RTÉ Television today announced that it had accepted the resignation of its Head of Sport, Niall Cogley, to take effect immediately. Mr Cogley leaves the organisation after many years to accept a newly created position with Setanta.
In announcing the acceptance of Mr Cogley's resignation, Noel Curran, MD of RTÉ Television, said: "We wish Niall every success in his new position. He has been a well-respected and highly valued colleague to all in RTÉ Television and in a particular way to those involved in Sports."
He continued: "RTÉ's commitment to bringing the best and most comprehensive range of sports to our audience is second to none and will continue. During this year alone we will bring Irish viewers over 200 hours of Olympic Games and 75 hours of European Championships as well as the usual top-class coverage of GAA, soccer, rugby, horse racing, motor sports, golf and various other sports. RTÉ Television will remain the primary source of home and international Sports News and coverage for people on the island of Ireland."
The position of RTÉ Television Head of Sport will be advertised immediately with a view to appointment later this summer.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
Isn't Tony O'Donaghue the Sports editor, would that not leave him next in line? He seems decent enough, whats he like on EL?BTW He reads message boards!![]()

IMO all personal opinion should be put to one side when being head of sport. In the case of the Cogleys it quite clearly wasnt being done. No LOI yet we see hockey matchs and all-ireland rugby matchs. Its a public service paid for by the public.
It cant be run like domestic newspapers where by they are looking only to please their beloved ABC1's.
Its a service paid by the people there as a service FOR the people. Ive always paid my TV Licence i should get something back.

RTÉ attitude to domestic sport is brutal in my opinion, and that is not just football.

Well hopefully who ever comes in will make sweeping changes ! god knows its needed. RTE's Coverage of all other sports is pretty good to be fair, but at the end of the day they are our national broadcaster, and should no matter what be showing our national football league ! is there any other country out there that their national broadcaster does not show at least a highlights package of there league ? Its a joke IMO. Especially now that eL players are starting to get international recognation i thought there would be a much bigger interest from TV stations. Jesus, trying to sell the league to Sky might be our best option to try and get some air time !![]()
You never know. With the development of Sky News Ireland, you could see Sky developing their own stand alone Irish channel in the future, dedicated to news and sport. They clearly want to get into the Irish market, and this channel would probably not cost all that much taking Skys satellite infrastructure into account.Originally Posted by Roo69

Lads, when the new guy takes up his post we should try and lobby him to make change.
Anyone got any ideas on how best to approach this.

Apparently hes going to Setanta in the hope they can win the Terestrial rights for the GAA championship. well, if they won the rights that would leave an awful lot of money available in RTEs hands. Surely they could spend some of it on the LOI (or Field Hockey or white water rafting).
