Fair enough. But can you elaborate?? Most of what I read rang, er, true.
Did you comment on the article about these misconceptions??
It was refreshing to read some other views, especially those of the North's fans(over and above the tired cliches on here), which at least represent a slightly more measured take (Not that I'd agree with them) on the situation.

No I didn't comment. To elaborate, Crusaders is not and was not a Protestant club nor is or was Newington a Catholic club and so on. It is a shocking and stereotypical statement.
Nearly every paragraph contains factual inaccuraces and/or stretches the truth. Basically it is a load of balls imo.
Hmm,
not too many of the locals posting on there are agreeing though.
Which seems strange.
But if you're in N.Beal-feirste, fair enough.
Para1.
********. I wonder what Martin Murray makes of that.the Under-13s of Crusaders, once a Protestant, loyalist stronghold, are sharing their pitch with the Under-16s of Newington, a Catholic club.
Para 2.
********. Linfield have and have had numerous Catholics playing for them for years now.Crusaders – lying second in the Irish Premiership, behind Protestant Linfield –
Para 2
1,000 not 1,900there were more police officers on duty – 1,900 – than had ever been recorded at a UK football match.
Para 3
Not only ******** but an unbelievable comment."This club was a very unwelcoming place during the Troubles," Mark Langhammer, a Crusaders board member, says. "If a Roman Catholic had walked into our bar just 10 years ago he would have been shot dead.
Need I go on?
Agreed. You should point that out to The Guardian then, definitely.
I would link to this thread on their comments section but your comments would be rather obscured in with all the rest, to the untrained eye!
Why would Langhammer make such an unbelievable comment?
If you leave out the "shot dead" reference, does it hold any water at all?
I bet the FAI are watching Rangers' Europa League progress with a large degree of trepidation.
I have to say that from my experience a few Southerners seem to see Man Utd as their national team in my experience having lived in Galway in a house full of students they always seemed to show more interest in the Premiership team it goes without saying that people look for success and this could explain why some seem to take more interest in the likes of Man Utd and Celtic.
Think Langhammer is involved in politics or something which could explain his hyperbole. To be fair ten years ago Loyalist paramilitaries were still active and there were a few murders that year. Does sound a bit of an OTT comment though.
I read it as a bit of Irish gallows humour that the interviewer didn't quite take in its joking context and reported as a serious remark.
what does gallows mean?

it means baby mice.
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.
Very good fly.
I honestly doubt Rangers will get to a final. Liverpool would be a great draw for dublin in terms of numbers coming over and for the economy as a whole.

Good points by Mr Parker above.
I wrote to David Conn directly, basically pointing out that positive coverage of local football was welcome although the cliches and errors weren't. He hasn't replied.
Fcuk knows. It's very surprising that an experienced local councillor would make such a bizarre comment. It doesn't hold water, I know/ knew Roman Catholics who regularly watch(ed) games at Seaview. And although not a rosary wearer myself, I have openly read the Guardian in the clubhouse. Nobody took the least bit of notice, of course.
He was a Labour councillor (obviously a rarity in NI) in Newtownabbey for many years. I believe his house was attacked by unionist paramilitaries a couple of times.
As the name suggests, many of his family are from Austria and Germany: I think three of his grandparents were refugees during the Holocaust. His mum was a music teacher at my school.

Very strange comment there on Crusaders. I happen to know the only Crusaders fan who went to Tbilisi for their European tie in the mid 90's and not that his religion matters in a football sense he is RC.
He is arsey as they say over here.
