First season was a test of character and resolve

Salthill Devon have confirmed that Mike Quirke will continue in the role of manger and Emlyn Long will continue as head coach of the club’s Airtricity First Division side next season after guiding the club to safety through its first season in the League of Ireland, securing their League status with a two-leg relegation play-off win over Cobh Ramblers.

In a statement issued to Sentinel Sport, the club says its first season in the Airtricity League of Ireland “was a test of character and resolve for the management team and a similar test for the players, who gave it their all during a tough season”.
Club Chairman Rob Meehan admitted that it was a tough first season for the side, but said that joining the Airtricity League was the continuation of a journey that Salthill Devon have been on for many years.

“Last season we finally provided that opportunity for the young players coming through to play at the highest level possible in the country and wear the blue and white stripes while doing so. We have always said that our aspiration was to provide that opportunity to all the players in Salthill Devon and last season we achieved that,” he says.

The club claims that is always had a policy of nurture from within, while also welcoming new and outside influences to the club, and said that Quirke and Long have developed in their roles over a period of season, first in the Eircom under 21 league and subsequently in the Newstalk A Championship.
