When I read mypost's post, I didn't think he was stating some kind of Dail or party rule, rather that Cowen couldn't realistically expect to resign from one position but be able to stay in the other.

Fair enough, but thats what would've happened. They've wouldn't have made martin Taopiseach for a month or so before a general elecetion. Cowan would've kept the job

If Cowen resigns, he will have to resign from both at the same time, as his predecessors did. The leader of the largest party in government, is automatically Taoiseach, even in an acting capacity. The Dail vote rubber stamping his appointment is a formality.

This isoving so fast it would make your head spin. David Drumm has surfaced and is spouting that Cowen talked to the NTMA. That's in the mail.

The Irish Times I think has the more explosive story, The night before the guarantee was agreed FitzPatrick and Drumm lobbied Gray to be included in the guarantee. In other words 1. the guarantee was planned and not an overnight breaking issue that it was sold as, remember, Gormley didn't attend as it was so last minute and quickly unfolding, and 2. Anglo was known to be toxic and the DoF originally left them out only for someone to insist on their inclusion.
This is a nuclear story. Expect some fans covered In excrement from 7am on Morning Ireland.

    Time for bed.

There's nothing automatic about it. Neither of his predecessors resigned 6 weeks from an election.

Nuclear story alright, it will end up nuking Cowen, Lenihan, Fianna Fáil and the Irish State

After 2 and a half years of pay-offs, mouth shutting, paper shredding, charades, memory losses, spinning, spoofing, optics and whitewashing the disturbing reality of what has REALLY gone on in the months leading up to/and on 29 September 2008 is on the way to being devastatingly exposed.

    No, he won't.

You really need to learn how to state facts and opinions in the correct way. If you did, people might give more credence to your comments.

Lynch resigned from both posts when he stood down, as did Haughey, Reynolds, and Ahern. They are the facts. Cowen will have to do likewise if he does the same.

And they all remained as Taoisigh in an interim capacity whilst we waited on the Dáil to elect a new one.
When a Taoiseach resigns its a declaration of an intent to resign on the election of a new one. You can't have a constitutional position where there is no Executive in the State.
Eg even when the election is called The cabinet will remain on until a new one us sworn in.

Maybe I'm cynical (in fact, I know I'm cynical), but I'm not sharing the excitement. Cowan isn't the problem; he's a symptom of the problem. Getting excited about him leaving is like getting excited cos your bubo burst; you still have terminal plague. Though it'll still be good to see the back of him.

Yes- the grassroots do, but he hasn't made up his mind.

The mischief making from the Lenihan camp really grinds my gears.

Gilmore on the news now. It sounds like he's calling everyone else's bluff about getting the election going.

I'm actually impressed with him now more than I've ever been before. At least, he's making a stand.

I think Gilmore has miscalculated: it might actually be the one thing that keeps Cowen in a job.

I have a feeling that all it will do is concentrate FF minds, and get them to circle the wagons. You know, the kind of “he might be a useless Taoiseach, but he’s our useless Taoiseach” siege mentality. The Greens are going to hang in as long as they can to get their legislation through, so the government have the numbers to defeat the motion.

If the government win the vote, there can be no leadership heave. Anybody leading it would look like a fool to support the government one day and shaft Cowen the next. And any FFer crossing the floor to vote with Labour would be out of the party: they would have to run as an independent (self-funded, c.€35-40k) and risk losing loyal FF votes while being punished by the rest of the electorate for being FF anyway. I don’t think the dissidents in FF are that brave.

Edit: just read on RTE (http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/0114/politics.html) that John Curran is to refuse government Dáil time to debate the motion. I presume now that Labour would have to table the motion under their own speaking time... To misquote the French general who witnessed the Charge of the Light Brigade: c’est la guerre, mais ce n’est pas magnifique.
