The budget will pass and the government will survive as always.Originally Posted by Fr Damo
Despite everything that has gone on since the last Election, the Greens have approved the programme for government twice, so the government has stayed upright. The only thing threatening it is the lack of independent support. Until the byes are called though, there is no hope of an election. The government are currently spending money challenging Pearse Doherty's court case for his constituency's bye, in order to maintain it's artificial majority.
However, given the certainty of who will lead the government after the election, it may be better economically if the election process is bypassed completely, and we have a 1994-like changeover.

pearce doherty saying the election will be done by 29th november
Havin a weekend away is quite frankly, lettin ur team mates down!
It's ok, Michael Lowry says the state of the economy shouldn't be used as a reason to bring the Government down.... [bangs head against wall]
You couldn't make it up.
Don't think so culloty82.
They could probably hold out on Donegal NE for a bit. But politically the pressure to hold the other two will be intense. They may still appeal to the supreme court though.
If they were to decide to hold 3 or 4 of them they may as well just go ahead and call a general election, as that is what would happen anyway.

Nothing in Law, but SF says if they try and go ahead with one, they'll challenge the other two. Politically, it'd be very hard anyway. Very funny that it's Coughlan that's going have to oppose the Writ. Even more shame on the Greens if they continue to deny democracy.
Given the track record, I wouldn't be counting chickens that Donegal SW won't return an FFer anyway, if the byeletion is held.

The Greens say that the byelection should take place immediately. Game over for the government.

Why is it game over for the government ? I hope your are right but - there is still no obligation to hold the other 3 bye elections.
It's not so much the Donegal SW one, but if they hold the others the government will almost certainly fall, and the time-line for that now seems to be for the spring.
Even as it is they are walking a very fine line and I think even one further loss could see the end of it.
It seems to make little sense for the government to try to stagger on any further.. the writing is firmly on the wall.

On the contrary - if the greens can hang on for another year then it suits them better - better to get as many more paycheques as they can before they become unemployed after the next election. Same can probably be said of half of FF sitting TD's also. They will hang on now for all they are worth.

Still on Bertie - sorry, I didn't realise this had gone on to another page - given the prices he's charging for speaking, a fiver says he hasn't done a tap in his contituency either. He should leave his seat, his consituency and preferably the country. Better still reopen Spike for him and him alone. Put a CCTV camera on him so we can all enjoy it. Oooh, and install stocks. I'd love to give him just one funt up the hole, and I'm sure there's plenty others like me. We could set a Guinness record for the longest queue in the world...

Radio Kerry just talked to Seán Doherty, a DJ with Highland Radio, who confirmed the by-election will be held on the 25th. He also said that even though Doherty is the firm favourite, a FF Senator called Briain O'Domhnaill could yet win. Still, no need to worry while Healy-Rae sorts out vital matters like the Tralee by-pass and Kenmare Hospital!
Seriously though, on the day the government are to announce they need to cut €6billion from the budget, they're going to appeal the decision of the courts to force athe by-election to the Supreme Courts...
And not one of them sees the irony there?
