Talking Seagulls ensure nightmare start for Gannon

    Dundalk 0-6 Bray Wanderers
Jim Gannon’s first game in charge of Dundalk turned out to be an unmitigated disaster for the border town side, who fell to an earth-shattering defeat in front of their own fans at the hands of one of their supposed rivals for one of the three automatic promotion spots.

Colm Tresson, the former Drogheda United man, netted a hat-trick for the visitors, who reclaimed top spot in the division for 24 hours at least.

Midway through the first half, Dundalk trailed 2-0 and were down to ten men following the indiscipline of midfielder Gary Sliney.

At that stage, against a side of Bray’s undoubted potential, it was surely damage limitation stakes for the home side, but they failed miserably even in that.

Eamon Zayed netted his first league goal since returning to Bray from his loan spell at Crewe after eight minutes, and he teed up Tresson’s first two minutes later.

Sliney, who had been booked for a foul on Maurice Farrell, was shown a second yellow after reacting to Eddie Gormley in the 21st minute, and by that early stage the game was up for Dundalk.

Bray were given the chance to humiliate their opponents, and duly took it – Tresson made it 3-0 11 minutes after the break after Chris Bennion had failed to hold Robbie McGuinness’s shot, and the experienced utility man completed his hat-trick with a header moments later.

McGuinness made it five in the 81st minute, and John Flood rounded off the scoring a minute from the end.

Dundalk: Bennion, Coburn, Clarke, Curran, McGuinness, Markeny, Dunne, Sliney, Vaughan (Haylock, 80), Geoghegan (Noonan, 24), Kavanagh.

Bray Wanderers: O’Connor, Gifford, Farrell, Lynch (O’Reilly, 83), Charles, Gormley (James, 83), McGuinness (McGrane, 83), Tresson, O’Brien, Flood, Zayed.

    Referee: T. Connolly (Dublin).
