Ireland lost their semi-final match 2-1 against Finland this morning.

Former Limerick player Sean Kelly scored the goal for the Irish selection from the penalty spot after Daryl Kavanagh was fouled.

The Irish team, selected from a number of applications to the Professional Footballers' Association of Ireland, will face the loser of the game between Sweden and Norway later today.

The players are hoping to impress scouts and managers that are attending the event in Oslo.

The team is managed by Liam Kelly.

The number of full-time football clubs in Ireland has decreased rapidly in the last two years, leaving several players out of work ahead of the new League of Ireland season.

Aye but who started, who came on as subs etc etc. Are the games only half games? Thought I read that in the paper during the week.

Wonder why not have full games half hour doesn't give much time to judge a player.

Because it's not a way to judge players. Any players who are of interest will already have been scouted, this is merely an object in window dressing, to pretend something is happening. While I admire some of the work being done by the PFAI, there were a number of barefaced lies told by the head man back in December. I can pick up on 3 of them, though one is so glaring as to merit mention. He claimed that they were in discussions with the Russian Players Union (their counterparts in Russia) about a future match etc. However while the media in Ireland nodded like happy dogs and regurgitated it ad nauseum, one small fact had to be pointed out, Russia doesn't have a players union! Plus, it is almost impossible for a LOI player to get a contract in Russia due to restrictions on foreign players and salaries. He knew this but still spun it to make their efforts more important.

I sincerely hope some players will be picked up from this, though if it were more than 2 I'd be very surprised. And it'd be interesting to know if those players were not already going up for training.

It was organised by FIFPro, not the PFAI. They were merely invited.

    not a fan of mcguinneses.

However I do want to correct you on some of your statements Specifically if you go to the fifpro website and click members and the map of russia you will see details of "union of football players and coaches" with a web address of www.psft.ru (http://www.psft.ru/eng/eng_index.html). So your statement of "Russia doesn't have a players union!" is incorrect.

Saw in a paper today Stu Byrne saying he was not going to change his mind about retiring if thats the case why bother taking someone elses place to go and play in this.

You're assuming there was someone else who wanted to go on it

Byrne was asked to go to help the other players.

    I should say I agree.
You can not blame Byrne for going on the trip, you would have to look at the management. This is about players who want to get a contract with a club then only player who wanted that should have been invited. So a member of the union has lost a chance to get a contract.

I wnder on what basis the players were selected? Best 17 (+ Byrne) on PFAI list? Volunteers?

Not a real big issue for me because most of them are terrible even by LOI standards so don't think they'll get full time offers anyway.

Tippex, I can assure you, it's not in operation here. And what's more, there has been no contact from the PFAI, or any discussion about camps/matches. I can't divulge where he came up with his statement from, but I can 100% assure you it's nothing more than pushing out an idea before they have any solid ground, or even a 1% chance of it happening. As I said, none of the players in the FIFpro "camp" from Ireland would be Division 1 level in Russia, hence the Russians would never bring it about, again this is from facts on the ground. The Russian Union has been proposed but has not been ratified or recognised by the RFS (Russian Football Federation). One of the candidates in last years Presidential election had it as part of his platform, however when Fursenko was anointed before the 2nd round of voting, it was put on the backburner.
