I agree with the league champions being involved but a league 11 is more suitable because Rovers could be still in europe at the time of the tourny.

In promoting the league, will be FAI or any club be looking at attracting these barstoolers to league games? The league needs it's players to have a higher profile, this tournament can help with that. It's expecting a lot for them to just come together for a few days though.

Choosing the league champions makes footballing sense, as they train together week in, week out and would probably be more competitive than a cobbled together Queens Park Strangers.

But I presume that the competing club would receive a fee for playing in two matches. Any idea what that might be? €50k-€100k? That could be seen as giving one club a sizeable financial advantage over the rest.

Might it not be better to use the U23 squad for the games? They will have trained and played together a couple of times before, and they’ll represent a number of clubs among whom the participation fee would be spread pro rata for the number of their players in the squad.

I think the fact that they would have to pay for the LOI team to play is why they are going with the "Airtricity League" team rather than just letting our league champions play in the match. Every penny count's for the FAI these day and they wouldn't want to be shelling out money for a LOI team to play in the glamer competion no matter how small the fee.

This is also the reason why Limerick weren't allowed have their friendly with Barca this Summer.

Dont see anything wrong with the league champions getting another 50-100k,
More money going into the league and something extra to play for, for at least 10 years, and they would put up a much better show than 11 players meeting a few hours before, and would attract more to the games too.

More money for league champions means more incentive to gamble.

And that hasn't shaken out too well in the past.

I'd be surprised if either the FAI or Endemol expected to have to pay whatever Irish team took part. I'd imagine they think the exposure and 'privelege' of playing the big names is payment enough.

The labourer is worthy of his hire.

And if clubs are providing players for a money-making exercise, as opposed to a genuinely representative fixture, they should be given something.

I'd rather see a fee per player rather than give a lump sum to one club (which Mr A correctly points out ain't brought much joy in this league). €3k or €4k per player could see half a dozen clubs getting €9-12k; not a hell of a lot, but I daresay no club would turn their nose up at it.

Players on international duty get a match fee so I'd imagine players on league duty should as well. I'm for the league XI. It'll help raise the profile of the players which is a good thing for their respective clubs. All teams need some star names which helps to bring in support.

The clubs got nothing for the man u game. The players were expecting to get something but it wasn't decided before the game anyway

That there's no LOI team involved shows exactly what the FAI think of the league.
It's a headache they want to go away.

    Except there is league involvement.

Pretty weird to bring up a thread that hasn't been touched in a month and still get it wrong

It appeared like it was a new post by yourself this morning on the train. So I replied. Eh thing is Dodge, there is league involvement but its gonna be a league xi not an LOI team per se. So point still stands I would have thought. Also could have sworn that anyone reading the post would know what I meant too.
    Ah well.

If you had read the thread your point was made. Don't see the reason for your post (a month late)

who cares when he wants to make his opinion heard? Is there a time limit on these things?

There appears to be stu. Something seems to be eating Dodge today.
As I already said this post popped up on my phone this morning as new and I thought dodge merged it just recently. I wholeheartedly apologise for any offence caused by bumping a dead thread.
I will refrain from doing it again and I will make sure I look at the post date in future before replying.

And here's a turtle cos I never saw him before now.
