Two bad errors in the Cork defence gifted the three points to Wexford in Ferrycarrig tonight in what turned out to be an eventful second-half. Wexford started Packie, Shane N., Anto, Murt, Gareth, Ben, Shane D., Greg, Kevin and Danny and Gary up front. First half was relatively tame affair with Gary having a good cross into the box in the first minute which McNulty did well to hold onto. Barrett then went off injured for Cork after about five and Danny ballooned one over the bar when found in space in the box. A Cummins goal was disallowed for offside later on in the half and with fifteen to go, Shane D. went off with his long-term leg injury to be replaced by Deano. Wexford rallied right at the end of the half with Danny and Kevin having chances. Nil-nil at half-time.

Second half started brightly for Cork with Cummins turning and smacking one off the cross-bar and a few minuted later Cork got a penalty when one of their forwards was bundled over in the box. Packie got down low left to the Cummins penalty and held onto it. McNulty then did well to turn and hold onto a deflected shot from Danny but Wexford went ahead bizarrely a few minutes later when a Cork defender, under no pressure, chested the ball back back to McNulty and only succeeded in knocking it into the corner of the goal. More play-acting in the Cork defence then gifted another chance to Ben but he stabbed it wide from an angle. Packie then pushed away a low header at his right-hand post. Second goal for Wexford followed when a bad back-pass allowed Danny to round McNulty and push it home in his last game for the Youths for some time.

With the fourth official just showiing a three-minute board, Cork got a goal back when their winger found space on the right and slotted it under Packie as he came out. Poor referee then took over and sent off a Cork player for slight aggression in trying to get the game re-started. Another yellow was given to another Cork player and referee couldn't get the game restarted as he played traffic cop with various unintelligible signals. As Cork again remonstrated, he blew up for full-time. Late sub. for Wexford was David Miller (different from the one who played for us a few years ago) and he looked very lively up front - watch out for him next year. Hopper had also come on for Shane N. in first half. Murt again played very solid at the back while Danny and Gary did well up front against a Cork defence which looked very shaky when dealing with backpasses. About 450 at it with great Cork support who gave their team fantastic encouragement - well done to them

Mick Wallace confirms in today's local paper that David Miller who is mentioned above and whose debut it was is only sixteen. Some prospect in my view. Mick's son, Joseph Barry Wallace is also knocking them in for fun for the Youth's underage sides. I'd say we'll see him pretty soon in the senior side.
