Will Stokes or Sheridan be called up now?
I doubt it. It'll be two from Doyle, Long and Walters, with McGeady also able to play behind a striker.
Can't say I'm unhappy that any of those is out. We can try a new pairing upfront which is no harm. Long's last game and a half really excited me. Doyle looked superb against Arsenal on MOTD.
The lack of strikers in that squad is frankly scary. The fact that he wont call up the likes of Stokes, Sheridan, Cox, Sammon...even just for the fecking training sessions.
Up front isn't exactly a problem area for us though; injuries notwithstanding, we'll ideally have Keane and Doyle starting competitive games and we have plenty of back-up in Long, Sheridan, Stokes, Folan, Best - all of whom have experienced Trap's tactics. What Trapattoni wants and needs, is a consistent set of performers who know and understand his system. Walters, a new face, will now more than likely get a longer game alongside Doyle and/or Long, which can only be a good thing. Trapattoni knows what Sheridan and Stokes have to offer and can call upon them if and when required.
The problem areas, as I see it, are in defence and centre midfield. In defence, with respect to Kilbane, we're looking for a proper left back and a reliable back-up/option in centre half. Trap has invested a lot of faith in Cunningham and now that he's playing regularly at a relatively high level, perhaps he can make the left-back position his own. Since O'Dea is just returning from injury, perhaps Clark will feature in defence. He might even pop up in midfield. Wilson could do the same.
The thing that I'm looking forward to, is seeing who plays at right back. Presumably O'Shea will start, so that leaves Foley, Kelly and Coleman. I'm also anticipating the return of Hunt, but we're coming down with wingers.
Mrs Stuttgart let me watch about 3 minutes of PNE versus Hull, while an incoming phone call interrupted her watching a SKY+ recording of Masterchef Australia. It looked like Sledge was limping and the commentatot was saying he was injured. Maybe a JOD / Dunne CB pairing with a new right back?
Clark and Dunne CB?
I'm watching the game. He's playing right full. There's nothing wrong with him except a terrible attitude. Didn't bother his arse to track back for Hull's goal. Hull nearly got a second for the same reason. We'll see if he comes out for the second half.
Treacy's on the bench btw.
Edit: St Ledger has moved to left full. He also has a bandage around his leg now.![]()

St Ledger played better in the second half but totally at fault for Hull's second goal. Made a mess of a clearing header and was then knocked off the ball by Nick Barmby.
Treacy came on halfway through the second half. Looks a player but a bit raw around the edges. Decent right foot on him for a left footed player.
Kilbane played 60 mins for Hull.
St Ledger was carrying injury and was at fault for both goals. Interesting that Daniel Comolli was there possibly watching Ayala rather than Sean. Treacy didn't do much when he came on except get himself booked.
Back on thread, why the hell hasn't Trap called up Stokes? We need another option to Robbie, particularly if he is ever injured long term and Stokers rather than Long is the best option IMO.
Aye i think it's alright to say "he knows what stokes can do" but he also needs to test these players. He knows 100% what Keane and Doyle can do so why play them? And although i wish it could be, i cant see trap putting Josh back to CB. He seems to start players completely regardless of their club form. Think about it, when Miller didn't even have a club he was getting starts and then when he found some of his old form with hibs he was dropped from the squad!
A sickening part of me believes green and kilbane will be starting for the rest of this campaign...which is frankly ludicrous.
stokes should be in the squad, form irish striker at the moment, it beggars belief why he isnt in the squad. Personally id much rather O'Shea centre back alongside dunne going forward with new fullbacks, 2 from kelly/cunningham/foley/ and in time perhaps coleman, but not yet. I think Houllier sees clark as a holding midefielder and he is getting game time there so perhaps there is where we'll see him in future for ireland. Traps reliance for two defensive midfielders would mean you might see the useless green still play as andrews only coming back to fitness and whelan not playing regularily. Yes Keane and Doyle are our first choice pairing, and rightly so, but its games like this friendly where we should be trying new things
Stokes has been asked to up his game this season against Rangers for Celtic and in the Europa League for Hibs and he didn't excel himself in either. He is a tremendous talent but at the moment the form strikers are Long, Doyle and Walters.
