Would hardly be a promotion for Cook ?

It's probably not a step up in quality but it is definitely seen as a "bigger" job and a good performance there will be perceived as being better by clubs in England. It seems the SPL is the only way for a manager in Ireland to step up the managerial ladder. Plus he gets 8+ games a year against Celtic and Rangers, which for him would be a lot bigger than playing Bohs or Rovers. His budget will be bigger, games on Sky, just an all-round bigger challenge for him.
Hearing the deal may be off now.

Paul Cook will be staying in charge of Sligo Rovers, the club can confirm.
After giving permission to speak to Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone in recent days, Cook will stay in charge at The Showgrounds and we look forward to final matches of the season.
The club would like to thank supporters for their patience over the issue amid the speculation.

Cousins seems to think he'll be in charge next year given that he's been chatting to players about next year. The club are happy enough with the job he's done as far as I know so I can't see there being much in that talk.
Upwards to the vanguard where the pressure is too high.
