    Rooney v Ferguson

When a player takes on Ferguson, there will only ever be one winner as Keane, Stam, Beckham, Van Nistelrooy etc. have shown down the years. Tonight's statement from Rooney never mentioned the financial elephant in the room, so Round 1 has definitely gone to the manager.

I thought Rooney played it well. I'd still only give it 50-50 that he'll go. Torres and a new contract in January.

Bit of a rant from Ian Holloway here, along with comments from Steve Bruce, Roy Keane and Alex McLeish:

It's not the same - none of those players was indispensible, but Rooney is to Ferguson.

I really can't see Rooney staying following the ugly reaction of large sections of the United support, with the banners at the match and gathering outside his house tonight in balaclavas to threaten him. It was never even close to being this venomous with Ronaldo. I know the situation with the Glazers is the root of a lot of the anger, but there's no excuse for the disgusting way Rooney has been treated by people who adored him only a week ago.

But he's not taking Fergie on is he?? He's telling him and the club he wants to leave and sadly he has the power to do this. It's 2010 now not 1994. The power is with the player and there's nothing Fergie can do about this other than let him see out his contract and go for free but the owners won't allow that.

Fergie and United playing the victims has to be one of the most stomach churning sights to witness.
Dunphy came out with a gem during the week saying rightly, United are a failed financial institution.
They are definately on the way down how far and how quickly it happens is another thing.

I'd nearly bet that not a single extra person bought a newspaper because of this.

Nope, the whole move was to strong arm United into giving him more money. Worked too

Just don't think anybody would buy a nespaper specifically to read about this story (or pretty much any story)

It's all people in work are talking about here anyway (it's on Sky Sports pretty much non-stop). Maybe newspapers is a bit old-fashioned; I'm sure TV viewing figures and website clicks are way up in places; I'm sure there'll be more interest than usual in United's next match. I'd be fairly certain front stories sell papers; fairly sure there must have been some studies into that. There's some lazy googling for lunch.

I don't doubt obviously that money was a motive too; I just thought the whole thing was resolved a little bit too quickly. Seemed like a cheap promo shot as much as anything.

    Story creates interest, no doubt.

Just think that for fast breaking stories like this people get it elsewhere. Internet, SSN, radio. People who buy newspapers will buy one anyway, people who want to know whats happening will already now.

    Yeah, fair enough.

So I wonder how much ad Revenue that farce will have generated for Sky Sports or MUFC.com?[/getting hip with the new technology]
