Longford

Late goal from Wolfie secured the three points in what seemed to be very close and open match in Longford tonight. Wexford started Packie, Shane N., Martin, Anto, Gareth, Ben, Shane, Wolfie, Kevin and Danny and Gary up front. Due to the chronic traffic coming out of Dublin, missed the first twenty-five and Longford's goal but Wexford supporters said the team had been doing well up to then. Longford had a close header from a corner just as I came in and shortly afterwards Gary had a run and shot from the right hand side. Just coming up to half-time, Danny beat the offside trap and had a clear run in centrally on goal but slightly miscued his shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Brady's cross for Longford then brushed the top of the cross-bar with Packie stranded and teams went in at half-time at one-nil for Longford.

Second-half began with a good Longford chance when their forward just got a toe onto a cross and couldn't direct it properly. Shane D. then had a shot just over the bar and clearly winced in pain with the effort and was substituted about ten minutes later. Wexford's equaliser followed and was a cracker wiith Kevin getting the ball wide left, coming inside and burying one to the roof of the net from about twenty out with the Longford keeper having no chance. Deano then came on for the injured Shane and Greg later came on for Kevin who had been asked to fill in in midfield for Shane. Oladele then beat three Wexford defenders and found Hynes, who had come on for Longford, with space in the box but he took the wrong option and chance went begging. Winner came for Wexford with about five to go when a long cross found Ben (?) beyond the far post who headed it back for Wolfie to nod home with ease. A Gary run and shot which found the outside of the ground and a Longford effort which Packie held easily finished the match off with Wexford coming away two-one winners.

Overall, a much more focused performance from the Youths than last week (surely Mick's presence isn't the key ..... or is it?). Thought Ben did very well wide right, did brilliant in the air for a little chap while Wolfie battled strongly in midfield and Murt looked more comfortable in the middle of the defence. Like last week, Shane's presence in midfield was missed as soon as he went off and he will leave a large gap there when he goes to Kansas next year. Think a point against Cork next week secures top of the bottom half of Division 1.
