    Are you really that naive?
Unless you were there the most you would have seen was a loop on Sky News. If you know anything about the layout of the Phoenix Park you'll know that the protesters could only have succeeded to intimidate and inconvenience residents of the area without having any impact on the proceedings at Farmleigh House. They got as far as they could realistically be allowed to go and then it was time to go back. The demonstration was purely to satisfy the selfish needs of its participants. It was probably one of the least productive events to take place since the Fine Gael Ard Feish!

As far as I'm concerned anyone who turns up to a "protest" wearing a Celtic shirt deserves the water cannon

One female Garda had to be treated in James Connolly Memorial Hospital. Various objects were thrown at the line of un-armed un protected Gardaí

The White House said it was "very concerned" about the reports.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Wednesday. "We continue to follow this closely. We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint."
    Thats ok then.

    For what?
Did she get her "head beaten off" ?
(BTW, I don't believe any Garda should be injured in any way)
What objects were thrown. Every report I've seen mention 2 bottles and 2 bricks.
4 more missiles than should have been thrown, but thats a hell of a lot less than was thrown last Friday out the Cross.
The Government, and Gardai wanted to show off their muscle and new toys.
You are still trying to justify the totally over the top response. Following your argument to its logical conclusion, you would support the deployment of armoured vehicles at eL games, as Senior Gardai can now point to the possibility of violence between rival fans.

There was a hell of a lot more than 2 bottles and 2 bricks thrown!!!!

The water canon was the easiest and safest way for the Gardai to move the crowd back before things did get out of hand.

If there had been no water canon there then the crowd would've converged more on the front line of Gardai who would've been forced to beat them back with batons ala mayday 2002 and I'm sure that would've went down well!!!!

No no Patsh, thats a leap of your own logic.

There were 25 of the leading politicial figures in Europe being protected by the Gardaí. The Gardaí started out policing the rally/march/protest with un-armed, un-protect Gardaí. They were attacked. The Gardaí had to defend themselves and at the same time disperse the crowd. As a result a few hippies got a shower, which they wouldnt have gotten if they just complied with the direction of the Gardaí and moved along.

I'd say Patsh we'll have to agree to disagree.

The Gardai there were 3 to 4 miles from the EU leaders. There were at least 3 to 4 more lines of "defences" before anyone could have reached anywhere near the government leaders. The Gardai were deployed there so that the delicate ears of these same leaders would not hear the disgruntlement of the people who are paying out the money for their wages and for the security surrounding them. All you so-called "democrats" have a very peculiar understanding of the word.
