For sure it's terrible news, but I wouldn't rule him out just yet. He made the decision not to retire during the summer, and I'm guessing it wasn't solely for the opportunity to play in the Nations League. He should be back either just before or just after Qualifying Proper starts, so if his recovery is successful he should still be able to play a part (even if only as an impact sub)

Any word on his progress? Does his contract run out in the summer?

He was co-commenting on Newstalk over Christmas and said that he hopes to be back before the end of the season. Said that he is working hard (as one would expect).

I can't remember exactly what else he said but I had assumed this season and his Burnley career were written off but I was left with the impression that's not the case.

A great servant for Ireland. Impossible not to love the guy really. That's a hard injury to come back from, especially at his age. A guy that made the most of his talents. Enjoy your retirement Mr. Walters.

For me, he was the lodestar for what it means to be an Irish player. Always a privilege to see him play. Good luck with the next phase of the journey, wherever it leads.
Hello, hello? What's going on? What's all this shouting, we'll have no trouble here!

Someday, he'll let those two German players get the ball.
    But not today.

Congratulations to Jon Walters, son of the god Luch of the Long hand and the mortal Dechtire, and nephew to King Conor of Ulster.

Ugh, you sound like a guy who'd bore a whatsapp group to tears

Jon Walters quite simply is the template for what a 2G player should be. He broke his body for Ireland. I think that his career benefited from Ireland, and consequently we benefited from his career.

The very least from Jon Walters was that you knew the opposition would be exhausted, harassed and seeking the care of the Samaritans, without ever losing his discipline. We've lost a warrior, but we knew this day was coming.

    Slán agus beanacht Jon.

An absolute warrior, and a very good finisher too. I always thought he was our Carlos Tevez, making runs, tracking back, hassling the opposition non stop and a very confident finisher too.

You sound like a guy who has a go at anyone that's a little bit different to the herd.

Now back to Jon, as powerful as the one-eyed Balor and as cunning as Bricriu the bitter tongue!

Good point on Walters' career. I think Ireland and him were very much mutually beneficial. Had all the components to make him a fan favourite for Ireland fans.
Folding my way into the big money!!!
