Let's not let this thread be derailed. Amond will hopefully at some point feature for Ireland if he proves himself up to the task.

And that's the big issue which, in my opinion, a lot of posters miss. One way a player needs to be judged is by the quality of the players they are proving themselves superior to / capable against.

There have been a few times when the cry of "What about Keith Fahey/Kevin Doyle? Did he magically improve overnight?" The answer is probably no. The improvement in his ability over a few months would be marginal. But what the transfer allows the Irish management to see is how he fares against a better quality of opposition. Just because a player can bang in goals / command midfield in the LOI doesn't mean he can do it at the top level. It doesn't mean that he can't either, the fact is that we just don't know. As a player moves up, we get a fuller picture of how good they really are. This will happen with Amond also.

He was a sub but did not get any playing time. His team drew 1-1 away from home.

    That's my prediction.
how did that prediction work out again?

Amond on the bench to start today

Would be nice to see him make a breakthrough, we need a third striker who can actually do something (until Connolly and the Clint regain their form at least )

    Amond has come on (stream)

    Amond's own words:

“It’s everyone’s dream to play international senior football. I’m not going to kid myself, it’s going to be a really tough task. No disrespect to the Irish league, but there’s noone going to get picked up from the Irish team. Keith Fahey had to move before he got a cap and ‘Fats’ was probably the best player in the league for a few years – and he deserved a cap even when he was in the Irish league.

“Trapattoni said a while ago the league isn’t good enough to just jump into international football, so I know I’m not going to jump straight in, if I do eventually get a couple of caps it’d be a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to play with Ireland no matter what level."

Amond is quoting Trap when he says the league isn't good enough, so those are not his own words.

He also says that Fahey deserved to be capped while playing in the LoI. It looks to me as if Amond is realistic about the situation (Trap doesn't look to cap LoI players until they prove themselves at a higher level) without fully endorsing the idea.

I don't know, he seems to make it pretty clear that he's going to need to continue improving as a player before he even comes into contention.

maybe he has that opinion of himself CD but at the same time he says that that is not necessary for everyone - e.g. Fahey. Obviously Crowe and Jason Byrne were good enough recently also. Kevin Doyle and Shane Long became good enough very quickly.

People saying that nobody in the league could possibly be good enough to play international football while in the league is kidding themselves. Its not that black and white. Trying to make it out as a black and white issue, as certain posters here do, does them no favours in terms of their credibility. Similarly, posters who claim that the League is brilliant do their credibility no favours either.

Well Byrne at least had proven himself against European opposition (but ultimately wasn't good enough). Fahey had too but he still needed to adapt his game when he moved to a superior league (Premier League - he seemed to slot into the Championship without compromising his style much).

I do think there are players in the LOI capable of making the step up but they need to prove they can by playing a higher standard of opposition than we have here. Amond could have done so had Sligo gone on a decent Europa run next season, but realistically moving to a higher league was the only way he was going to prove himself and improve as a player. I really hope it works out for him.

Doing a bit of googling, it seems he got a knock on his knee in training on Tuesday but was back in light training today. A bit of a doubt for the weekend, you'd think.

Also Pacos blog here - commenters seem impressed by him.

Where can I find a site for Pacos Ferreira's results and teamsheets so I can see if Amond plays, and for how long?
