The mythical thing that the fascists hooked into has an appeal, and I can only speculate that someone who is hanging on by a thread to reality, if even that, would easily be swayed. By all accounts his spell in Germany really tapped him on the head of both the fascism, and - more curatively - the drug addiction that permitted what should be a hypothetical thought to become some kind of ideology.
