"Clubs from the Republic of Ireland, Finland, Denmark, England and Hungary were victorious as three more UEFA Futsal Cup preliminary round groups got under way on Monday. There were victories for clubs from the Republic of Ireland, Finland, Denmark, England and Hungary as three more UEFA Futsal Cup preliminary round groups began on Monday.

Among those commencing from the sole three-team section, Group A in Lithuania, and hosts FK Nautara Kaunas fell 5-3 to Ireland's Sporting Fingal SC, whose sister football club also made their continental debut this summer in the UEFA Europa League. Nautara led 2-1 until the 17th minute when captain Artūras Karmazinas put through an own goal and Ross Zambra and key man Hygo Cezar struck after the break to made it 4-2. Tomas Nemanis pulled one back but with Nautara pushing for an equaliser, Fingal goalkeeper Marcin Fornal shot into an empty net.

Fingal will qualify if they beat Armenia's FC Kaghsi Yerevan on Tuesday, otherwise the group will be decided the following day. Coach Junior da Silva told UEFA.com: "We have a good chance of improving by playing in tough tournaments like this one. For Ireland, futsal is a new sport and we are happy to see our young players playing in the UEFA Cup. Our task is not only to win the group, but generally to promote futsal in our country." "

I think those matches were in the same complex where LIthiuania defeated Great Britain in the Davis Cup earlier this year.

They qualify for the Main Round taking place in late Sept./early Oct. in Tirgu Mures in Translyvannia (or close enough).
Bronze medalist in 2009/10 from Azerbaijin, Latvian side and the third seeded hosts, which may even things up a bit. vg.

    Good work Fingal.

Though a genuine question - how is the club paying for these trips ? I can't imagine there's much in the way of revenue coming in for Futsal games.

Also - did they quality to represent the ROI, or are they there on an invite ?

Wasn't there a Futsal tournament run by the league in previous years as a qualification tournament? Did they win that?

They won the LOI futsal tournament this year. The previous winners were
    2007 - Rovers, 2008 - Pats, 2009 - Cork.

Pats played their group games in Finland (winning 1, losing 2). I'm fairly sure that there's a UEFA grant/prize money to pay for the weekend.

No idea how the other Irish clubs did

EDIT; Cork lost all 3 games in Bulgaria (according to wiki)

It's best described as the formal UEFA rules for Indoor Soccer.(futbal + salon).
UEFA want it to be a large 'Grassroots' and 'Development' feature to enhance the skills of individual players for the eleven-a-side game. And because UEFA want it, it's in the interest of ALL member associations to want it too.

    Rules of the game.

    Stuff to be wary of:
    1. When you ask about ' a fans' game' it does attract fanatics.

    2. International Court Soccer.
Football played on a squash or racket court. 2 players a-side is a popular representation.
