ROVERS LOOK TO FUTURE WITH APPOINTMENT OF GENERAL MANAGER

If anyone doubted Sligo Rovers’ ambition for the future, the appointment of a new General Manager will serve as a significant statement of intent. As Rovers prepare for an exciting climax to a hugely dramatic season, Packie Lynch takes the helm this week as the club’s first General Manager. The club believes Packie’s background both as a League of Ireland player and experienced business man augurs well for the future.

When he announced the advertisement of the post in July, Chairman Dermot Kelly said ‘Sligo Rovers is one of the League’s most established and popular clubs, and this status has been earned on the efforts of countless volunteers who have served the club with distinction over the years. But the Club has developed beyond the capacity of volunteers contributing what spare time they have. Any club professing to be ambitious needs professional input on and off the field. On the field, we have matched developments in the modern game with sports scientists, fitness coaches and dieticians. This effort will hopefully see us challenging at the top end of the table.’

Packie Lynch holds a Masters in Business Studies (MBS), and is leaving his post as Regional Director of with Bank of Scotland (Ireland) to take up his new challenge with Sligo Rovers. Packie believes he is joining the club at an exciting time; ‘With the EA Sports Cup already in the bag, we look forward to the possibility of European football next season, and the first ever domestic FAI Cup Final at the new Aviva Stadium on 14th November.’

‘I am extremely honoured to be appointed the first General Manager of Sligo Rovers in what are exciting times for everyone at the football club, and most importantly, its many supporters, sponsors and army of volunteers. I have been overwhelmed by the welcome I have received and the enormous goodwill shown by the whole community to the club.’

The Chairman believes the General Manager will bring a level of professionalism to the administration of the club’s affairs; ‘Presently the two primary activities of the management committee are fund-raising and fire-fighting, and we want to progress to the level where we can plan for the future with conviction and confidence.
The only way we will achieve this ambition is to look beyond the pressures of the current season and to be more strategic in planning for the future of the club.’

The new General Manager believes ‘Sligo Rovers is well positioned to build upon off-the field endeavours and hurculean efforts of the management committee and the on-field achievements of the first team playing squad and coaching staff. It will be my responsibility to take the Club to the next level of performance in every respect and to provide a clear road map to ensure the potential of the club is fully realised. It is a challenge I’m really looking forward to and I would everyone in the local community to support us in our strategic endeavours to build a sustainable and successful community-based football club which is best in class and fit for purpose for the professional era.’

Chairman Dermot Kelly shares this ambition; ‘Our performances this season have attracted deserved plaudits, and there is an enormous sense of goodwill towards Sligo Rovers in the local community. If we can find a way to harness this goodwill to underpin the future development of the club, there is no limit to what we can achieve.’

Background: Packie Lynch’s football career

Packie is a product of the UCD Soccer Scholarship system and played for UCD for six years. He later moved to St Patrick’s Athletic winning back to back Premier Division titles in 1998 and 1999. In a ten year playing career he made a total of over 300 appearances with the two Dublin clubs and also represented Ireland at international and national league level.
