    Name changes

Just trying to do up some of the programme for the UCD-Limerick game and was wondering when youz changed from Limerick United to Limerick City to Limerick FC?

Also, who's the best person to get in touch with for pen pictures?

    Thanks!

For pen pics go to the official website http://www.limerickfc.net, or contact Tony Kiff who runs it.

As for the history\name changes - AFAIK, this is how it goes: The club was originally formed in 1937 as Limerick United. In 1983\84 the club moved out of the Markets Field to Hogan Park and changed its name to Limerick City. A further name change was required in the early 90's (I think it was the 92\93 season) to Limerick FC. I could be wrong but I think the name changes were necessitated by financial problems, or the club going bust.

Can anyone confirm or correct the above?

If you check out the Irish section on www.rsssf.com, it has all the tables since the League began. you'd see when they changed.

    ahhhm

1937 to 1978 we were Limerick AFC, Limerick United from there to '83, Limerick City for ten years and finally Limerick FC but who cares its all the same club and we were founded in '37. Also well done to that handsome young dashing new supporters club PRO, who got for the first time ever club notes into the LEADER. I believe he also got them into the echo, the kerryman, clare champion and Nenagh Guardian...so im told!

I can confirm that they were in the Kerryman at least.Apparently they did a profile on the Kerry boys in the squad and spoke about the supporters club and its plans for the future etc.It can't do any harm to promote the club to our neighbours who do not have a league of Ireland club to support, so well done to the PRO for that, the more people we can get on the terraces here, instead of sitting at home watching the mancs, scousers, and gooners etc can only benefit the club as a whole.Keep up the good work guys.

Good stuff. The one paper that you should really be looking to get the notes into is the Weekly Observer, which serves West Limerick and North Cork. There were loads of West Limerick fans at the games towards the end of last season, so get those notes in! Match reports and the odd team picture\picture of goalscorer would be very effective as well, as it would help familiarise people with the team. Observers number is 06389682 if you need it, unless its changed since I was a PRO myself a few years back.

Spot on the Weekly Observer has massive sales in these areas and it would be very beneficial if Limerick Fc to have a voice in it.As you said many of us that go to the games are from that neck of the woods, bring the club to the people and see what happens. If you have contacts in their offices from when you were a PRO then maybe the Limerick Fc Pro can get something up and running..............

I think gspain may be the man to answer this correctly? I believe the above may not be factually correct - it's not merely a matter of name changes, you're talking about different clubs entirely clubs AFAIK - not one club that has changed its name. Certainly, Limerick United/Limerick City were 2 entirely different entities and went into a bitter legal mess to prove it. The original was Limerick Football Club, not Limerick United.

    That's right.

Anyway there will be so few at the game (UCD have fewer fans than us) that it will not be challenged to strongly..

Dermot Morgan was a UCD fan. He said he supported them because he was nervous of crowds.

Maybe, but the club was originally formed in 1937, and thats the date credited as the year when the club began. It was refounded in 1983 as Limerick City, then changed again to Limerick FC, but ultimately its the same club really. I wouldn't agree with you when you say they are different clubs entirely, as I said some of the name changes were more out of necessity rather than want. Limerick footballs past is very shady when it comes to finances, money and politics. Unfortunately it still is today.....

Please yourself...but why would a football club take ITSELF to court? Conor74 could probably even clarify if this is legally possible?

What's that - average gates? You don't believe those figures do you?

And there is a more philosophical issue here too. Do you judge how many fans a club has by its attendances? If so then Munster rugby only have 15,000 fans. I reckon most UCD fans are there "on campus" so if they don't go then they are not fans. Limerick fans are spread over the country so there are more fans than the attandances would suggest. (Makes sense to me )

I believe our figures, I counted them myself!

Yeah I'd say Limerick's games have all been sell outs with thousands looking for tickets.

Not true actually, most of UCD's support is from the local area. Not too many students go to games unfortunately.

Also, Limerick's attendances have been bolstered by Dundalk and Harps, who both have respectable away support, especially on a Saturday. We've had Athlone and Galway (who brought 12 fans to a game changed at short notice).

    'Fraid we win this one!
