Ireland had been in the doldrums of international football for years before and there was never ever booing of the team.Originally Posted by Footie_Fan

Ask any of those who didn't support Keane if they booed that night, and I'm sure the answer would be no.
Point being that firstly, bad performances have never warranted booing in Lansdowne before and secondly, all those who were forced into rapturous jeering ,allegedly purely because of results on the pitch, happen to be Keanites...

McCarthy's reign had turned into a joke. He was too emotionally attached to certain players and he couldn't make a decision. Kilbane was having a shocker that night and he left him playing up front for twenty minutes while we were losing 1-0.Originally Posted by Beavis
Your probably right that the Saipan issue and the World Cup in general had some influence on the booing not so much of what happened but how it was handled by the incompentant McCarthy:
We played extra time without knowing the Spanish only had 10.
We hadn't practiced penalities. (The Germans practice... how many penalty shootouts do they lose?)
Putting on a defender, Babb, in Moscow in the dying minutes when were 3-2 down. Babb then goes and scores an own goal.
Sitting back against Macedonia waiting for the equaliser in 1999.
Sitting back in Zagreb waiting for the Croatians to score in the last minute. Playing Roy at centre half in the 0-0 with Iceland.
I could go on and on.
Terrible decisions like all those above led to me conclude his time was up and I voiced my opinion.
People only started voicing their opinion after Saipan. The writing was on the wall. Regardless of McCarthy's tactics since 1996 people weren't particularly vocal it until it suited them to bring K***e back. Its easy to pick out McCarthy's errors could do the same with K***e. Got sent off on debut as captain, failure to play the Iran second leg, threatning to walk out in Saipan, no shows for friendlies......
Absolutely delighted to see young Roy back in the squad. Ireland's best ever player can only improve our chances of getting to Germany after he single-handedly got us to the last World Cup.
Roy Keane is a legend
