This Rosenberg outfit look dreadful - a shadow of the club that has consistently caused top European teams trouble for decades. The Norwegians occasionally look technically superior but really Linfield will probably be disappointed if they don't get a goal.

They don't tend to perform well in Europe over the past few years (saying that - they've been through a bit of managerial turmoil over the past couple of seasons)

    Just to put into context:

    Last season's League campaign:

    1 Rosenborg (C) P 30 W 20 D 9 L 1 F 60 A 22 GD +38 PTS 69

    This season so far:
    1 Rosenborg P 16 W 10 D 6 L 0 F 29 A 8 GD +21 PTS 36

The only game they lost in 2009 was 3-2 to IK Start in Round 27. This was after the title had been secured - and came about thanks to Start scoring goals in the 89th and 90th minutes (the winner coming from the penalty spot as a result of idiocy by a Rosenborg defender)

From having watched a lot of them over the past two years (mainly due to me living in Norway where EVERY League game is shown live on either free-to-air or satellite TV) - I'd say they not to be taken lightly - the tie will be won and lost in the Lerkendal next week...

Could it be that a weak league ill-prepares them for European football? I mean, man for man they have a better set of players and should have controlled the game tonight. Even allowing for the fact pre-season unfamiliarity tends to narrow the gap between weak and strong teams, they never really looked like they believed they could score, let alone win the game.

Good result but Rosenborg will be pretty happy with it too. Bigger teams are usually happy to get out of the away leg even and look to win the tie at home.

    Norwegian press reports as follows:

    Linfield - Rosenborg 0-0

(Dagbladet): It is three weeks since the Northern Irish team Linfield started their run up to a new season, and two and a half months since they played their last competitive game.

Nevertheless, they were in no way inferior to the current leaders of the Norwegian League at an almost deserted Windsor Park tonight, where Rosenborg should show that last year's qualifier defeat against Qarabagh was only a temporary glitch.

Rosenborg were the better side, but with a little luck could have gone home with a loss. With 0-0 in the first game - the task of winning should be manageable in the return meeting at Lerkendal next week.

They had more than enough to break down a hard-working Linfield team. Before the break Rosenborg created a few small chances, and they were criticised by Viasat expert Knut Torbjørn Eggen after the first 45 minutes.

    - "Rosenborg must sharpen up", growled Eggen, and called the half "high pressure and hopelessly unsuccessful".

If Rosenborg progress next week as expected at the Lerkendal - there remains much work to do before they are ready for group play in the Champions League. If so, expect both a third and fourth qualifying round later this summer.

"With a little luck" seems to have the complete opposite meaning in Norway.

edit: I guess it probably doesn't have the automatic positive connotation it has in English

I'll be able to show this as long as the weather isn't as bad as it was here this evening. It knocked my satellite signal out .

I'll post the channel link tomorrow evening when I make one.

Great result for Linfield. Three for three unbeaten at home for Irish League, it's a route upwards.

For fans of the Country ranking, at the beginning of the season 9 match points this season would give IRL a co-efficient fo 10.000 in season 2012/13.
Match points are 2pts for win, 1 point for a draw, 0 for loss. Half that for qualifiers and Play-Off rounds.
Play-off rounds don't recieve the full points.

Or enjoying the cup atmosphere and the race for the Play-Off Round.

Very strange. No one in Norn Ireland seems to take European competition very seriously.

Probobly not unrelated to results for Northern Ireland teams over the years, cant imagine too many fans getting excited about going to watch their team getting trashed (as was expected V Rosenborg). Also off season up North and fans are on holiday, marching, marching,. marching

Very good result for the Blues but expect Rosenborg to progress.

Attendances seem to be even worse up there than here, but it's a bad time of year, and even a crowd of 5,000 in a 20,000 capacity ground like Windsor would look 'almost deserted'

Couple of good results for NI clubs this season though.

Brilliant effort by Linfield. Rosenborg are a team that quite regularly play in the group stages of the Champions' League so a draw is a fantastic result. That said, you'd expect the Norwegians to win the away leg.

TNS will be relatively happy with the 1-0 defeat I'd have thought, gives them a decent chance at home. In recent years, they seem to do well in the first leg and then blow it in the return (last year they lost 2-1 in Iceland, the year before that 1-0 in Lithuania, and the year before won 3-2 at home to Ventspils, and the year before that lost 1-0 in Finland to MyPa.) They lost all ties, so hopefully they can finally get it right this time.
