TEHRAN, Oct 25 (AFP) - Clashes broke out and several dozen people were arrested in the Iranian capital Thursday night after the national team defeated the United Arab Emirates in an Asian World Cup play-off.
Most of the thousands of fans who took to the streets celebrated the 1-0 victory peacefully, but the gathering in the city's Shahrake Gharb area quickly turned into an anti-government protest, an AFP correspondent said.
Several clashes broke out between the protestors and Islamic militiamen who eventually dispersed the crowd and made the arrests.
However, the mood in the capital was more calm than the previous World Cup match nights.
