North Korean forward must play in nets

    See here.

Rather than declare three keepers, North Korea put down as their third keeper a forward. FIFA have told them that he must now play in nets and can't play outfield at all.

That's a load of nonsense surely? If they want to play their keeper up front, what's to stop them? I think we tried the same back in 1990 when we only had two keepers with Niall Quinn as our nominal third (don't know if this is true or urban legend), but this was with 22-man squads. Would have rightly screwed us over though!

(Though it should be ackowledged that North Korea were definitely trying to bend the rules, and don't deserve that much sympathy.)

Do the rules specify that the teams have to name three keepers?

It seems mad really. If a team only wants two keepers, why can't they select them?

It doesn't make any sense to me at all.

They do, yeah. I think it came in when squads went up to 23. There may have been moaning about the likes of us (and Colombia, I think) in 1990 who only declared two keepers and so had extra outfield opportunities. For all the good that it'd really do.

    Stupid rule.

If you want to bring 23 strikers you should be able to.

A keeper is a player just like any other, you should be able to play them wherever you want.

Surely the '3rd goalkeeper' will pick up an injury just before the tournament kicks off and they can then draft in a proper goalie? If FIFA want proof then I'm sure North Korea could get somebody to break something!!!

They don't want a third keeper though; they want this forward lad. They just aclled him a keeper cos they were told they had to have three keepers, so they filled his name in beside where it says "keeper".

I know but now they know they cannot use the extra forward they might as well call up a proper keeper.

    Oh right!

Yer man may as well go to the World Cup, I suppose. When did third choice keepers ever get used anyway? (Bar Zaire's messing in 74, and I think Greece in 94).

I've read somewhere recently that it has only happened 4 times. I cannot for the life of me remember the details though!!!

I was going to ask the question actually. Was wrong on Zaire, it seems.

Going on this logic does this mean that no Goalies can play out pitch? Seem to remember Peter Schmeichel played up front before.

When he was younger, yes. But for Denmark though? And in a finals?

I seem to remember some team petitioning to call up a replacement goalkeeper late on after both of theirs had been injured. Maybe this is supposed to stop that sort of thing from happening.

Jorge Campos played up front for half a season.

In 1990, two teams called up replacement keepers during the tournament - England and Argentina. That was allowed, and neither keeper made an appearance (not even on the bench, which was restricted to seven players at the time I think? Now you're allowed all 12 non-playing members on the bench). I think now if your keeper gets injured, tough, cos three should be plenty.

There's a list of goalscoring keepers here. Just for fun.

This was more recent. A big European team - Spain or Italy, I think, and in the last few tournaments.

Surely a case where the oft quoted phrase in these situations "there'll be war over that" is more than a remote possibility...?

very silly rule should be able to bring who you like ...... its funny in a way though aswell wouldn't ya laugh if this 3rd choice keeper/striker actually did have to play in goals because of injuries or something.... that would be hilarious

Didn't we only take 2 keepers to 1990 (Bonner & Payton) and to 1994 (Bonner and Kelly)? Did we take 3 in 2002?

I think the logic at the time was that you could call up a third keeper if one of your other 2 got injured (as stu pointed out above).

should be able to take any 23 you want, if you end up having to use an outfield player FIFA would have their motive. 3 keepers should be a suggestion.shay given, dean kiely, and alan kelly went to korea and japan in 2002
