It's a pretty cool spot. It's a nice city, fairly compact city centre. The people are really friendly and love the Irish. It doesn't feel like Spain really, but they do have pintxos, which are pretty similar to tapas.

Word of advice though, it's dead mid-week. We went from Saturday-Wednesday. Saturday was busy enough, but it was dead the rest of the time. The streets are empty at night. A bar man said that unless there's some occasion happening (which may be the case for you), the Basques don't go out during the week.
I can't remember places where we went, it was a few years ago now, but Cafe Iruña was. It's a cracker looking bar, sort of Middle Eastern decor inside.

Ye may want to take in Santander, it seems busier, apparently it's mad craic in the summer. And learn how to ask for a beer in Basque, ye'll get a smile for it.

A few mates went two years ago and loved it. They had been touring around northern Spain and took in a few cities, half them said Bilbao was the best.
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

For a day trip, Gernika is a nice spot with a lot of history.

I think it's only half an hour by bus but I can't remember for certain.

Spanish, but ye'll notice loads of Basque being spoken. Young people seem to speak more Basque than older people, but all the ones who speak Basque also speak Spanish, albeit not stanard Castilian. Roads signs, etc. are all bilingual.
No-one expects ye to speak any Basque, which is why even a wee bit seems to be appreciated. The only thing I got 'told off' about was calling it Bilbao. It's Bilbo in Basque.
