Goal in injury time got a very welcome three points for the Youths tonight in what was otherwise heading to be an entertaining and fairly equal nil-all draw. Wexford started with its settled eleven of Packie, Wolfie, Anto, Breener, Dean, Jimmy, Shane, Patsy, Kevin and Gary and Danny up front. First half was equal enough with Waterford getting a volley on target early on but best chance of the half fell to Gary who got onto a header back to the Blues' keeper, went round him but from a very acute angle could only stick it into the side-netting. Blues were hitting the ball long a good deal and it was playing into the Youths' strong point with Breener mopping up everything. Surpise was Liam Kearney playing most of the time at left back. O'Callaghan free-kick late on in the half was dealt with comfortably by Packie. Nil-nil at half-time

Second-half started fairly quiet but Kevin had a good chance mid-way through when he shifted a ball onto his right-side on a Youths break and drilled one just past the post. Waterford replied immediately when a one-two between O'Callaghan and Kearney left Kearney clear but his shot was touched round the post by Packie. Waterford's subs. made a difference then wth O'Sullivan looking very lively on right-hand side when he came on. However, just as the three-minute board came up Dean ran with the ball into the heart of the Blues' defence and he and three Blues' defenders all fell to the ground together. With the Blues' supporters looking for a free out, referee let the game go on and ball rolled on to Jimmy whose shot was deflected over Konopka off an outstreched Blues' defender. Almost immediately from the kick-off, Yoyths broke again and Danny had a left-sided one-on-one with Konopka but couldn't put it away. In last minute, O'Callaghan had a half-volley direct from a corner but it flew just over. Excellent performance all over the pitch from the Youths who battled hard all night. Could mention Jimmy, Breener and Dean as having outstanding shifts. Late subs were Chris Kenny and Shane Sinnott. About 700 at it with great away support.

good summary of the game was a good game thought the defence tonight where excellent. midfield kept O'Callaghan quiet and to keep Willie John Kiely that quiet is no easy task

That result was a nice surprise! I had pretty much written off this season after a very disappointing (and at times farcical) first round, but maybe the lads will turn things around now that they've seen what they can do.
