Maybe not, but quite funny really.
I know I'll be watching, hoping against hope that maybe, just maybe, Ndo nutmegs Gary Neville, Richie Ryan scores afree kick or Peers wins a header against Berbatov. Oh the surge of pride will be enormous, won't it?
Then we can all devote another 16 pages to chatting about the game we wish never happened.

Give me a break. The majority of the people who are so anti this game will be glued to it tonight, make no mistake.
As opposed to a slient protest in front of a blank TV screen? I wont be watching it (haven't the time this evening) but most football fans I know will try and watch as much football as thye can on TV. Doesn't mean they think its a great idea

I would have started with Sheppard up top, but looks like a decent team.

Nah Sheppard is far too hot and cold, and mostly cold. Madden is a far better player. Interesting to see he hasn't started the league's best midfielder, thankfully, the last thing we need is to loose him to an injury. Hopefully Joey and Peers only play the first half.

What other LOI activities? They also earn substantial participation fees from clubs, not to mention sponsors for various competitions, so they’re not bankrolling the whole show…

Why do you think they did that, if they couldn’t afford to pay for it?

The reasons for it have been clearly explained throughout this thread. If you can’t understand them, I’d have to surmise that you’re a bit slow.

Irish players have shown very clearly over the past number of years that they don’t have the best interests of the game at heart, so in no way should their interests be the deciding factor in any issue

When you add in various factors like the FAI postponing competitive fixtures for this game, not allowing Limerick play Barcelona, not allowing Bohs v bray clash with a Champions League qualifier despite this game clashing, the LOI publicity machine in overdrive for this when they barely mentioned clubs European games this year, the fact that players will have to play again on Friday night and numerous other cringeworthy factors its clear there are plenty of possible reasons for people not to like this game

But if you can’t understand any of them..
so bray didnt play villareal and bohs didnt play aston villa recently?
the barca v limerick match wouldve been a financial disaster given the small crowd that wouldve turned up. limerick / munster people just dont turn up to these things.
never said the FAI bank rolled the whole lge.
so the fai shouldnt have got involved with the new stadium??

personalising your argument with the "a bit slow" comment is poor posting really but maybe it will earn you another green dot. well done

The small crowd that would have turned up to watch one of the biggest clubs in the world? Come off it.

The games you mention don't constitute "Games like this" as per Dodge's post. Limerick v Barca does.

(And sorry Dodge - I know you're well able to answer for yourself too...)

There's also the question of saturation. The casual fans over here are probably pretty sick of seeing the same 5 or 6 English teams come over to play in games like this. It's probably only fans of the Premiership clubs specifically and the odd LoI fan who attends these games, that's certainly the way it looked at the Villa-Bohs game anyway. If it was Limerick vs Barcelona, there would be A LOT more casual interest to see a team live that one never or very rarely gets the chance to see live.

But United arent even my reason for hating this game, it's that, for ever, the answer to the question "What was the first soccer match ever played at the Aviva stadium?" will basically be "a desperate fundraiser" rather than something we can have a bit of pride in.

I doubt it. but then again the rugby was a "sell out" apparently 40k tickets had been sold but the attendance was 35k and that was at a tenner a ticket compared to tonights at a min of €45 per ticket.

According to another forum I'm on, they read somewhere that the FAI have declared it a sell out

Not if they can't afford it. Simple business sense

personalising your argument with the "a bit slow" comment is poor posting really
Then stop trying to use the "I can't understand" argument. Either you can't understand it (ie you're a bit slow), or you can understand it and choose not to

What I'm hoping is that some of United's star players (Rooney would be perfect) pick up a few injuries which would keep them out for a month or two (nothing life threatening or overly serious, but something niggling which would stop them playing until October).

From Extra Time interview with Paddy Madden:

'Madden is delighted to be in the squad to face the side he has supported all his life and is looking forward to facing some of the world’s best players... '

“When I heard that I’d got into the squad I was chuffed, because as a United fan I’m getting to play against the team I support all my life” '

That's what we're up against in a nutshell.
    There is no hope.
