I thought the same myself! It's probably because there's only one woman in Monaghan!![]()
goo oonn Magicme!!
I only caught the tail end of that, but I got the impression the presenters were hoping for more barstoolers to come on talking ****e, and for a bit of a ruckus to build up. Did you hear how quickly they cut off that "ashamed to be Irish" guy when they founf out he was ashamed of the glory hunters, not the lads' performance?!
How is this going anyway??
Only time I went on radio was around the time of Saipan to compare Roy Keane to Michael Collins in his treachery and ask just what the story was with Cork people.
Now THAT was entertainment!
(Casual LoI follower (at best) here, you may or may not care about what I think!)
I wouldn't agree with the sentiment here that your typical Irish sports fan doesn't support its own in games like these. There's a thread here from general soccer fans and their take on the game.

A good quote here sums up my take on it as well.
People wanted the Irish lads to equate themselves well as they would for Irish lads in any form of sport. Though it needs to be understood that the LoI is seen in a poor light by the typical person, partly due to its increasingly Dublin centric nature, antics of Delaney such as with the Barca fiasco and constant financial strains and clubs going under. It's a competition few support outside of certain corners of the country so there isn't a strong affinity there. As for the game. Poor showing by our lads overall. Thought Williams did well in the middle and Ndo showed at least an appetite for attack. We never tested their defence really, which was disappointing.
Valencia was very good as was Rooney. Nani could be a big player for them this season.
Basically it was a home match with all the Manchester fans in the ground. The brief "United clap clap clap" chant that went round was a real head in hands moment for me. Frankly a complete embarressment to be Irish.
My Czech friend that came with me made the same point.
And another decent quote.
I can relate somewhat with the ManU supporters, I know in the case of the match tomorrow that I own a Juventus jersey and not a Shamrock Rovers one, that I've grown up with admiration to the likes of Del Piero, Trez, Buffon and greats like Cannavaro, Nedved, Zidane, Zambrotta etc. I've been to Turin its a lovely place, I've been to Dublin. It's not. Hence the dilemma. I'd of course support any of them if they pull on the green of Ireland but right now they're representing Dublin who I have no desire whatsoever in them getting any sort of personal glory. I'd like them to win for the sake of the league, but in no way for them. So I can see the problem, a lot of people here just seem to be seeing "Ireland vs England" tonight but there's more shades at play here than that. The match WAS a bit of a joke, but that shouldn't have any influence on allegiance. Irish people sitting in a stadium cheering on an English team against an Irish 1 is definitely going to be 1 of those social phenomenon that people look back on in years to come and think 'ah jesus' like flares and mullets.
Worst of all was what the watching english supporters are saying about the league and the kind of image its given itself from this.
(from bbc)
Get over yourselves, you played against a bunch of shelf stackers and bin men,It was the League of Ireland not Barcelona. If he plays against Liverpool and defends like that,Torres will destroy him.It will however make a change from Torres destroying Vidic and Camelhead.League 2 is generous in truth, more like a conference team. Owen hasn't been World Class since he left for Madrid, has been on a steady slide ever since, but he is a poacher and if he didn't score against this team I'd be worried. So all this says is he hasn't totally lost it, not yet anyway, probs won't be long though, I'd say another injury in about three weeks, out for four months, then come back score a goal, is 'world class' again lol, then injured and so on.
Well done Magicme! Good luck with the voice!

Irish people don't care about Irish football. Big shock.
It was nothing short of cringe-inducing to watch that game tonight. And I'm not referring to the result....
If I'd been in Dublin tonight I probably would have gone along to the game, but in hindsight if I ever get the opportunity to attend such a 'spectacle' in Ireland I won't. There must surely be nothing wierder or more wrong than being made to feel like a foreigner in your own country - and by your own people...
