    Most Capped Player

This used to be a stat in all the football books years ago. I'm curious about this one as a Longford fan as Avery John was sacked by us for (among other things) going awol while on tour with Trinidad in South Africa. I did a bit if googling and found that he won at least one cap on that tour, against Kenya, which would make him our most capped (sorry only capped!) player. But I dont know if anyone at the club has info about how many caps he won while at Longford. I 'm also guessing Wes Charles and Boco are the most capped players for the clubs they played for here?
Anyone know who the most capped players at each clubs are? And for those who havent had a player capped while playing for them, who has played most times at the next highest level (ie B, under 21, youth)

Dean Delaney would be ours with 20 under 21 caps.

Wes Charles played for St Vincent & the Grenadines while with us.

Eric Lavine and Luther Watson played for us, but I can't remember if either played for Barbados with us

Regillio Nooitmeer played for Haiti while with us, think it might have been a game or two max

Not sure if Rouse or Lavine were ever actually capped while they were at United.

    * Players capped at full international level whilst with club
    Barbados Eric Lavine
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Wesley Charles
    Barbados Alvin Rouse
    Haiti Regillio Nooitmeer

    * Players capped at Irish U21 international level whilst with club
    Republic of Ireland Seamus Conneely
    Republic of Ireland Jay O'Shea

According to a Limerick FC fanzine question, Johhny Walsh was the last player to be capped at senior level while playing for Limerick - versus Trinidad and Tobago in 1982, in an ill-advised FAI tour of South America around the time of the Falklands war.

At the moment, Jason Hughes has been capped at FAI underage level quite a few times.

Mbabazi is Pats most capped player (for Uganda). Records are patchy though. He was the last full international too. We've had 6 for Ireland (Shay Gibbons was the first, and has the most (4), Noel Campbell the last in 1971) and Jeff Clarke for Canada in 1999 the only other full international.

Colin Hawkins has the most u21 caps while with Pats (8). Joe O'Cearuill was the last to earn u21 honours while with us (in 2008). Curtis Fleming and Pat Fenlon were the first in 1990.

We've had 4 forme internationsal play fior us in recent years; O'Cearuill (Ireland), Ndo (Cameroon), Con Blatsis (Australia) and Dave Partridge (wales)

I'd say Boco would have gotten 7-8 caps whilst playing with us, That's just a guess however

    Good thread.

I think Dave Norman was capped for Canada while with us. A couple of years later (in 1986), he played in the World Cup.

We've obviously had loads of underage internationals at various levels for Ireland. Willie Browne was the highest capped for us, getting a B cap in the 50s. Under 21 caps have gone to Ciaran Martyn, Clive Delaney, Robbie Doyle, Conor Sammon, Ronan Finn, Gary Dicker, Conor Kenna, Ian Bermingham and Darren Quigley off the top of my head. I think the likes of Mick O'Byrne, Shay Kelly, Jason Sherlock, Barry Ryan and Tony McDonnell were capped at 21s level too. Gary Dicker's probably the highest capped of them; think he got seven or eight caps while with us.

O'Byrne and Sherlock definitely got u21 caps. Don't think either of the keepers did but at least one of them played for the B side (maybe not with you though)

What was the Northern irish guy you had? Seemed to get loads of call ups a few years back

Hugh Davey; meant to mention him alright. Scored for NI 21s against Azerbaijan to end a run of three years without a win. Currently with Glenavon. He got a few appearances alright.

Shay Kelly got a B cap I think. Before my time though, so I'm a bit hazy on some of those ones.

theres a local link with one of yer players stu as Willie Browne is from Longford who also played with us and bohs and won senior caps for Ireland in the sixties.. I am pretty sure that Lavine did win a international cap with Trinidad and Tobago whilst with us.. I think he came out of retirement to come back for his country..
Gary Cronin is he the right man to manage Longford Town?

There's only one local link between us and ye that matters Marty, and that's Walter Finn.

Dave Norman made his Canadian debut in December 1983, at which time he may have been playing for UCD, but if so, it was his only cap while playing for us. More likely that he went from Canada to Honduras than from Ireland though.

Edit - going a bit off topic, but Vancouver (whom we signed Norman off on loan) had quite a squad at that time. Liam Buckley, Dave Henderson, Terry Yorath, Peter Beardsley, Pierce O'Leary, Jim Holmes, Peter Lorimer (also played for UCD of course) and Willie Johnston, with John Giles as manager.

That's the rumour. That or he once tried out for Brazil but laughed at how bad they are and turned out for the Bolivian colleges instead.

Doing more research on the Dave Norman issue; great way to spend a Sunday evening! The NASL Soccer Bowl '83 was on 1 October, whereas Dave Norman's debut for Canada was in December, so it's probable he was a UCD player assuming he did play for us in the 83/84 season, which I don't think he did. Vancouver finished that season with 187 points - 6 points for a win, 1 point for a shoot out win and 1 point for each regulation goal up to a maximum of three points per game. And the Canadians wonder why people mix them up with the Yanks.

We had a few capped players in the 70's whilst still playing for us.

In the past 2 seasons we've had:

    Ciaran Gallagher - u17 and u19 caps.
    Ciaran Coll - u17 caps
    Chrissy McBride - Irish Schools

Most capped League of Ireland player of all (probably) is Frank O'Neill, 20 caps for Ireland all while at Shamrock Rovers.
Dundalk's record is 13 full caps (4 goals) for Ireland for Joey Donnelly.
