    Travel advice for Libya

I'm due to go on the first trip of many to Libya in a week and a half. I know plenty of folks who've been there for work (mainly ag, construction or oil/gas) but none who've been on holiday or for short trips. Anyone with any experience of the place, what to see or do etc?

Leptis Magna (pretty close to Tripoli AFAIK) is one of the best Roman sites anywhere. There's also Tobruk and plenty of Rommel/Monty sites.

    That's all I know

Thanks Davey Cakes, I've been reading up on the history of the place and finding out some amazing stuff. I know the first trip will be for 2 days, but I'm hoping to get over again in June and then a couple of times in the Autumn - should be fun :-)

Michael Palin was in Libya during the Sahara series; you can read the books on the website. Not much, but I'd say every little helps going to a place as out of the way as that!

That's one of the things I could remember (when you reminded me) about the country, so I got the episode online and watched it. I wish I'd more time to explore the country, though first things first. Thanks Stu!

Finally, after 3 false starts, got to Libya last week and was very impressed. It's a strange place in many ways, a real mix of everything. Tripoli is a fascinating city, some excellent sights (especially the Madina or old city) while the beaches are pristine! Lots of development going on and a fair bit of Irish business knocking around.

I got to see Sabratha and it was well worth the visit. Didn't get to Leptis Magna and next time am going to go south to Bani Walid and Ghames/Ghamdes. Really nice people, friendly, lots of english spoken and what theyre doing in advance of the ANC is very impressive. Football is the state religion and some of the local clubs are not just thinking big but progressive too.

I'd recommend a visit to anyone and even couples as it's quite relaxed and open. Be prepared for scary taxi driving, some of teh worst I've ever experienced!
