Pull the other one. Long, Keane, Murphy, McGoldrick, Walters, Stokes and Kevin Doyle off the top of my head are ahead of him in the pecking order; Eoin Doyle, Mooney and Madden too.
I know we're only the paddies like but that's ten players without including generally off-form or out of favor players like Best, Sammon, Cox and Noel Hunt.

His time at Birmingham, Swindon & Oldham would suggest that, yeah. Be interesting to see if another club from that type of level has another look at him.
We're long past the stage of players guaranteed places in the squad playing in the SPL. Same level as League One and LOI outside of possibly Celtic, even though they've been horribly poor this season too.

If you have a look at Scotland, who are on a similar level to us and it is their league, they've only called up one SPL striker in the past 12 months. That was Leigh Griffiths of Celtic. Even he managed 12 league goals in half a season in League One. Rooney managed 13 in two full seasons in League One.
Fair play. Great achievement and all and maybe someone in the Championship might take a punt on him. McInnes' good season over Aberdeen might be recognised by a Championship side who takes a punt and he brings Rooney with him. But I don't feel Rooney's current season form is enough to merit a call-up. I'd be very happy to see him called up if he can translate the goal-scoring form elsewhere.
On the flip side of that view, Eoin Doyle only scored 11 times in 49 league games in the SPL and then 11 times in one season in League Two before he embarked on his current streak. So it appears both players have hit their groove at the same time and right now I would say they're both about even in the pecking order. Now, based on our current forward options, you're probably right, Rooney and Doyle would still fall short. But when the next qualifying campaign begins, Robbie Keane will surely have retired, while Jonathan Walters, Kevin Doyle and Daryl Murphy will all be 33 and it's entirely possible all three might call it a day. In that scenario, Shane Long would likely become our main striker, with David McGoldrick probably his partner, if we use two up front. If Anthony Stokes can get himself settled, he may have the edge for the next place, but if not that leaves two or possibly three spots up for grabs between Stokes, Rooney, E Doyle, Cox and Sammon. So, given that, there is an argument that Adam Rooney is deserving of a runout in a friendly or two over the next year or so.
Of course there may be developments in the next 12 months that might change all this and squeeze out the potential claims of Rooney, Eoin Doyle etc; Reece Grego-Cox might become a breakout star for QPR; Patrick Bamford may respond to the cajoling of his mother's family (and the meteoric rise of Harry Kane) and switch allegiance to us (as Will Keane also could); Michael Drennan's blistering start for Shamrock Rovers might extend for the season and lead to a successful return to the Championship or Premier League next season. But should these things not happen, then Adam Rooney certainly has a strong claim for a squad place, at least, for the World Cup 2018 campaign, particularly if his goalscoring record continues through next season.
Can't find fault in any of the above. A few retirements for the next campaign and the door opens for Rooney, if he maintains his current form. One or more of Conor Wilkinson, Sam Byrne, Graham Burke and Sean Maguire could push on/develop too. Ronan Murray scored more in League One than Rooney did last season but, unfortunately, he hasn't played much at Notts County this season.
As for the Doyle comparison, Doyle went to the SPL from the LOI and then onto League Two and One. Rooney spent a few good seasons in the SPL before being unable to find his feet in League One. Doyle most certainly found his feet in League One and, I guess, the litmus test would be to see how Doyle got on if he went back up to the SPL again. Instead, he's moved to the Championship. Hopefully that move works out.

That's a pity - probably would not have made the squad for the Euros, with Keane, Long and Walters as nailed-on members and Daryl Murphy likely to be the one to join them up front. But assuming Keane retires afterwards, at least one spot opens up for the next qualifiers so he's still one to watch for that. McGoldrick would probably be his main competition. That said, a late-season injury to any of these players might give him an opportunity.
