I wonder how long before we see a lad from the Unionist tradition declare for us ? Purely for football reasons, a chance to go to a major finals maybe.

I have a friend from Coleraine who declared for the Irish surfing team rather than represent Britain. I think it had more to do with getting selected.

I have no gripe with NI born players defecting, my only problem is when they defect.

IMO, I'd like to see players who go through the NI youth teams being unable to decide they fancy changing. If you play for us at youth level you play for us for good. If you don't want to play for us then you can play for the FAI at youth level, no problem at all, I only want to see players who are proud to play for us doing so.

Those children of yours could break your heart by turning out for the FAI.

Thankfully the right decision was arrived at, and hopefully this has been put to bed for once and for all.

Don't the same rules apply though;about any players being 'up for grabs' until they're tied down by a full competitive cap?? Which doesn't just apply to Ireland and the British sides.....
And may not have an awful lot to do with 'pride'.

Thinking that myself seeing the copious sh*t he's been dumping here over the last few days. Maybe he's taken some Imodium? Maybe he's in a corner crying? Who cares?

Finally this is over, but Craftytoepoke you're right. I was watching an obscure film on thursday night called 'The Alf Garnett Saga.' It will not be shown on TV unless there is a lot of censoring of an extremely offensive racist epithet that rhymes with spoon, but my interest in it was that it was filmed where I grew up in 1972. In the film uber-racist Alf Garnett meets George Best in the toilet at Upton Park and tells him 'your one of those In-ger-lish Oirish aintcha? If you carry on playing like that, Alf Ramsay will pick yer.' Bestie, with nowhere near the acting ability of his footballing prowess, replies looking in his mirror and combing his hair: 'I like playing for Ireland, because I'm Irish.'

I have no hesitation in saying that I have cringed for months at the way the Irish Football Association have dealt with this issue of player eligibility - they certainly got what they had asked for yesterday- FIFA's Eligibility Rules UPHELD.

But, what's won is won, and what's done is done - life will go on.

It occurs to me that it must have been a bitter/sweet decision for vociferous advocates of a singular, "United", Ireland International team.

Sweet, in that Republic of Ireland Citizens, born in Northern Ireland, are re-confirmed (how many times is that now?) as being eligible to play for the Republic Of Ireland.

Bitter, in that the right of choice for those born in Northern Ireland who want to play for and represent Northern Ireland must now be respected and upheld also.

The singular, "United", Irish International team fantasy is now further away than ever.

The Englishmen came over in the year 2005
But little did they know that we'd planned a wee surprise
Sir David scored the winner, and Windsor Park went wild
And this is what we sang...

What we now have is a de facto all-Ireland team in which the FAI can pick any player from any part of the island. If that player rejects and prefers to play for the North, then so what?

If there was ever an official united-Ireland team it would only come as a result, in my opinion, of a united British team in which the three other FAs and with government interference, or through a FIFA ruling, which would eliminate NI. A united Ireland state itself would not necesarily see the end of NI (see Hong Kong, Faroes, etc). In that case, the choice would remain as it is today. A player from the 6C would choose between the British team or the Irish one. The FAI cannot compel any player play for them just because they have named them in their squad, just as the Spanish FA could not have forced Oleguer Presas to play for them (if in fact he was good enough in the first place).

From my point this is a sweet-sweet moment. It's now up to the players to choose, and if they're not interested in playing for us, it's either because they feel British or aren't good enough. I implore the FAI to start testing the water by picking players without obviously Irish names before they start getting accused of being a sectarian organisation and get a racial discrimination case by someone called William Craig or Edward Carson.

Probably, I'm saying it shouldn't though.

My problem is the scrotes who think they can take us for an easy ride through youth level and jump ship. If you don't want to play for us don't waste our time and sod off

Knowing the lack of scruples of many footballers, maybe when they started playing at youth level they wanted to play for NI, or at least couldn't care less. And don't think you're the only ones affected. Most of the Algerian team - according to the commentator - were born in France and had many had played or trained in the youth team. Still France cannot complain as most of their team were born in Africa.

The fact that the IFA has to pay "damages" to Daniel Kearns and all legal costs related to their willingness to uphold the eligibility statutes does make one giggle. But I think it's best for us just to move on and let them get on with paying off their debts.

That bad, eh? I don't know how they thought they'd win the case, let alone the moral aspect of it. Perhaps they should be now known as the beggars; They begged FIFA to change their rules. They begged the CAS to force FIFA to change the rule. They will now be begging for help in paying these legal fees, probably by raising gate money.

As for moving on, of course, but I'd still like the reaction from ourweeminds.
