Trapattoni offered Vatican manager role

Trap eyes a match made in Heaven

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has his eye on yet another national team job, but there's no need for the FAI to start worrying just yet.

Trap has said he wants to coach the Vatican City's team at some point.

The Vatican City is not a member of FIFA, but Trapattoni revealed that they have asked him to take the reins.

"I have been asked to coach the Vatican national side, but I am currently working for Ireland," he said.

"It would be fantastic, but not for now. When I retire I would like to try it."

Trapattoni was in Rome for the launch of the fourth edition of the Clericus Cup, a tournament for teams of priests and seminarians.

"It's a very good project to promote friendship and brotherhood, and it's also important to promote sport," said Trapattoni, adding that he didn't know if holy water was part of the kitbag for Clericus Cup teams.

Clericus Cup Board chairman Claudio Paganini conceded that Trapattoni won't be leading the Vatican to World Cup glory any time soon.

"It's just a dream for now. But we will get our team together step-by-step and Trapattoni would be the perfect manager."
