Who would you have in your all time Rovers starting eleven?

    This might help

Gather round, children, and I will give you the definitive all time greatest Rovers team (442). As a bonus, I will tell you why, in the cases where you will only have heard of them at your grandfather's knee. Be warned, I will brook no argument in relation to this matter and a crossed Avvenalaf is a cross Avvenalaf.

Alan Patterson Arguably the best goalkeeper ever to play in the league. In the title winning season on 1977 he gave a display in Finn Park that put the Alamo in the ha'penny place.

Eunan 'Bustie' Blake In time, I expect that we will agree that Seamus Coleman was the greatest right full ever to play in The Showgies but in their respective times there, Bustie was the best ever. At that time, LOI played serious representative matches against Scottish and English leagues. It will come as no surprise to you that Dublin clubs dominated these selections but Bustie was so good that his exclusion was out of the question.

David Pugh Consider the fact that most of the guys David played with would have made Choice and Manson look like Torres and Ronaldo and you get the picture. Another Alamo merchant.

Gavin Peers There is a God. 'Carry me off on my shield'.

Graham Fox Another 1977 man and a wonderful footballer with any club he ever played with.

Johnny Kenny Comment is superfluous. No one who was there the night they turned on the lights will ever forget the goal Johnny scored that night.

Pat McCluskey Pat was only 17 when he came on loan from Celtic in the 69/70 season. Christ, what a player. He went on to play for Celtic and Scotland but, unfortunately, took a few wrong 'social' decisions and never fulfilled his immense potential. Could have been better that Roy Keane. Still works as a match day host at Parkhead.

Tony Fagan 'Nuff said. 'Bury my heart on the half way line'.

Johnny Armstrong The flying Scotsman. Became one of our own and lit up the Showgrounds on many a dull afternoon when all around him seemed to be wearing wellingtons full of water. Legend.

Johnny Brooks Came amongst us when our experience of cross channel football consisted of The Big Match watched in a blizzard reception on UTV. Scored goals of unimaginable beauty and was probably the first player to catch the unanimous admiration of both the shed and the stand. I remember leaving the Showgies after another Brooks exhibition and hearing a young lad ask his father 'Daddy, who is Johnny playing next?'.

Paul McGee The one player who went on to make a more than decent career for himself. played over 25 times for Ireland and was the main man in the 1977 year.

So, that's it. Don't thank me - just don't argue with me.

I heard about this goal before, what was it like?
Screamer from 30 yards? walking it into the goals?

Gathered the ball on the halfway line and headed off, leaving defenders flailing in his wake. When he got to the box, had the presence of mind to remember to slip the ball past the advancing goalie and set up a season where we finished with the treble.
Eddie Annand scored a similar goal against Cobh but Johnny had the copyright at that stage.

Came back from Wolves because of a spate of injuries. He was definetely a class act, Ritchie his brother played in the same Rovers team.

Thank god someone remembers him,I'll never forget Martin especially having the pleasure of chasing his shadow around the Showgrounds in the late eighties, was a terrific footballer and deserves at least a mention IMO.

Bayly I have to say was one of the best players I ever saw in the Showgrounds, one of the lads who wouldn't have looked out of place in '77. Two more similarly classy players I loved watching were Charlie McGeever and Anthony Gorman.
"Even if the wind stops to blow
Even if the sea ceases to flow
Even if the sun ceases to rise
The name of Sligo Rovers will shine and shine forever like the morning star glittering in the sky."

That was the strip with small confederate flags down both sleeves, weird and just pure luck we had no black player in that team
