Countries Qualified for 2006 World Cup
Germany (as hosts)
Reuters adds: Earlier, Japan smashed seven past India while South Korea salvaged some lost pride in Asian World Cup qualifiers yesterday.
However, Iran failed to break their Jordan jinx as they were beaten 1-0 at home, despite dominating their Group One clash.
Japan, who struggled to beat Oman and Singapore in their first two games, completely outclassed an India team ranked 143rd in the world, winning 7-0 at rain-swept Saitama.
Dreadlocked defender Yuji Nakazawa scored two second-half goals for Japan, who were without injured Europe-based players Hidetoshi Nakata, Junichi Inamoto and Naohiro Takahara.
The Asian champions top Group Three with a maximum nine points. Oman demolished Singapore by an identical 7-0 scoreline for their second win, keeping the pressure on Japan.
In Group Two, there were mixed results for Iraq and Palestine, two teams surviving on a shoestring budget amid escalating political violence at home.
Striker Razak Mossa scored two early goals as Iraq won for the first time following back-to-back draws, crushing Taiwan 6-1 in neutral Amman.
Palestine’s unbeaten run came to a halt, however, as they lost 3-0 away to Uzbekistan, who went two points clear at the top of the group. Uzbekistan have seven points from three games, two ahead of Iraq.
In Tianjin, China thrashed struggling Malaysia 4-0 to preserve their perfect record. A second-half double from midfielder Li Xiaopeng killed off the visitors, leaving China in firm control of Group Four.
Kim Yong-su scored twice and was sent off as North Korea upset Thailand 4-1 in sweltering Bangkok to throw Group Five wide open. North Korea, currently serving a one-year ban from Asian competitions, briefly went top of the group on five points.
However, the United Arab Emirates beat Yemen 3-0 at home later in their first match under Dutchman Aad de Mos to go two points clear.
“I played terribly but luckily the rest of the team played well,” said midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura, despite having scored with a superb free kick in the 29th minute.
“Our preparation for this game was perfect. That was obviously a big factor in the result.”
South Korea had been lurching from one crisis to another following a humiliating goalless draw with the Maldives in their last World Cup qualifier on March 31 — a result that prompted Humberto Coelho to resign as coach.
However, well-taken goals from Ahn Jung-hwan and Kim Do-heon gave South Korea a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Vietnam in Taejon. The 2002 World Cup semifinalists lead Group Seven with seven points from three games.
“It was not the prettiest performance but we were patient and we played well when we had to,” said South Korea caretaker coach Park Sung-hwa.
In Tehran, Haitham Al-Shboul scored against the run of play to give high-flying Jordan a precious victory over Iran—their third straight in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.
Luckless Iran, beaten by Jordan in the 2002 West Asian Championship and Asian Cup qualifiers last year, slipped to second with six points.
**** sake Davros, even on Iraq v palestine you find room to have a pop at England. grasping at straws mate...
