Ireland boss Trapattoni still on Nigeria’s radar
NIGERIA still have designs on Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni ahead of this summer’s World Cup finals.
Having had to settle for third place in the Africa Cup of Nations under much criticised coach Sahibu Amodu, the Nigerian FA are reported to be prepared to mount a serious bid for the veteran Italian before the Super Eagles take to the stage in South Africa in less than five months’ time.
While there has been speculation in the past linking the Nigerians and Trapattoni – and indeed other reports, dismissed by the manager as "rubbish", linking him with Turkey and Juventus – the Italian newspaper La Repubblica yesterday reported that Nigeria’s football authorities are now prepared to offer a lucrative package, including the use of a villa in the capital Abuja, in a bid to entice Trapattoni away from the Irish job. The deal would also include assistant manager Marco Tardelli and fitness coach Fausto Rossi moving on with Trapattoni.
As it happens, Tardelli was in Ireland yesterday for the launch of Dublin’s year as European Capital of Sport and he took the opportunity to put the latest reports in context.
"If you open the internet every day, it is possible to see many possibilities for Giovanni," he said. "Giovanni is a very good and popular trainer, everybody asks about him."
Asked if Trapattoni is definitely committed to seeing out the next two years with Ireland, Tardelli replied: "From what I know, yes."
If that didn’t exactly sound like a ringing declaration of intent, perhaps some allowances should be made for Tardelli’s still imperfect grasp of English. And, for the rest of a brief update ahead of Trapattoni’s appearance at next Sunday’s Euro draw in Warsaw, Tardelli was certainly speaking as if the continuance of Irish football’s Italian reign was a given.
Surprisingly, however, Tardelli confirmed that, as yet, no direct attempts have been made to sound out any of those English players who would now be available to declare for Ireland under FIFA’s changed eligibility rules.
"We have many players who play with Scotland and England," he said, "but I don’t know if they want to come with Ireland. Maybe it’s possible but I don’t say the names."
Instead, Tardelli concentrated on a handful of players who could be in line for call-ups to the senior squad.
Said Tardelli: "We have many new names, (Greg) Cunningham, (Seamus) Coleman and (James) McCarthy. We need those players to go forward. (Keith) Treacy is a very good player. And I am happy that (ex-Coventry striker) Leon Best goes to Newcastle to play, it is important for us."
Eighteen-year-old Greg Cunningham is the newest of those names, the left-sided U19 international from Galway having made his senior debut for Manchester City as a second-half substitute in the recent 4-2 FA Cup win against Scunthorpe.
Asked about Liam Brady’s future as assistant manager, Tardelli said that while he speaks "every day with Liam" he wasn’t aware that there might be a problem with the Dubliner getting permission from Arsenal to continue in the Irish role. "I don’t know this," said Tardelli, "but I would be delighted if Liam stays with us."

Trap was mooted in the Italian media as a possible emergency replacement for Ballardini (who is being sacked as I type) at Lazio. But I would guess Eduardo Reja (ex Napoli, now Haidjuk Split) will replace him.

You are getting a lot of potential trouble from as of yet an unproven player. He has not produced it over a long enough period of time to say that he is an established premiership player.
One thing in his favour is that as City do not need the money they could let him go on attractive terms.
Might as well stand back and watch the circus act (Is he a Clown) that is Stephen Ireland play out. Perhaps he will become a football artiste !

Now this I don't like and I'm starting to get a little concerned. I've been mulling over the possibilities of Trap taking the Nigeria job part-time and the more I think abouit it the more I'm against it! This is bad news if there is any substance to it.

And, after Ireland failed to make it to South Africa after losing their play-off to France, Trapattoni's agent, Domenico Ricci, has now said he would welcome an approach.
"This is a very delicate issue, but of course Giovanni will be interested," Ricci told Kick Off Nigeria. Ricci confirmed that the Republic of Ireland boss did indeed have a contract allowing him to walk if he receives a 'concrete offer' by March 3.
"He can leave the Republic if he gets a concrete offer, but that would have to come before March 3 and then he can consider it."

Dont agree with this for one second. Trap has been nothing but good for us and it would be a disaster if he goes. From a shambles at the end of the Stan era to a solid well organised team playing with purpose on an strong upward trend. Its rubbish that the players played their own game in France, this has been refuted by many players since, suppose they played their own style in Bari as well and at home to Italy.
Nonetheless I think Trap will stay, he has continually reaffirmed his commitment and in any case it doesnt look like Nigeria have the cash to match his wages. It would be a disaster for us if he goes. No way would Sparky want the Irish job, doubt Hughton would either. We'd be left with similar candidates that we had last time around before Trap.
I agree with you completely about how important it is to keep Trap, and how good a job he has done for us (the old chestnut about the players playing their own game against France, Italy, Bulgaria away etc is one of the most ridiculously stupid arguments I've ever heard. The Staunton era showed what happens when that Irish team revert to their "own" game!)
But I do think we'd be able to attract a better caliber of manager now. Thanks to Trap we're back on the map again, not one of the plum European jobs by any means but not exactly managerial exile either. We can thank Trap for that, and hopefully he sticks around until 2012, when our qualification further raises our stock.
