The Mirror today is reporting the story too that Meyler is to join Hull for a fee of about 1.5 million in January. Good business for them, good move for Meyler. Sunderland might regret this in time.

Fee of 1.5m agreed according to RTE.

Meyler in Hull today (duh) to agree personal terms.

I don't think the current Cork City will get anything. The old company will get 0.5% of the fee for each year he was with them between 12 and 24 if I recall correctly.

Edit- just saw the follow up. But like I said it would not have helped the current CCFC anyway.

Did Sunderland pay his wages for the 2 years he was out, or is that sort of thing covered by insurance?

Given the performances he put in under Bruce for Sunderland - I'm a bit surprised that O'Neill has let him go so cheaply. Also at a time of midfield injuries.

There is a fair chance he will command a much greater fee over the next 2/3 years.

Presumably O'Neill needs to sell to buy and feels he can get a better player in his place. Not sure about that considering they're being run ragged by a brittle Liverpool side.

They will have to pay quite a bit more than 1.5m just to get a similar player to Meyler.
But Meyler is a risk and maybe not worth a gamble just yet from a club like Sunderland who are in dire need of a string of results right now.

Disappointed O'Neill didn't see him worth half a dozen starts before deciding but I suppose he has little room for experimenting just now the way things are shaping up for him at Sunderland.

Even when Martin has room for experimentation, he has shown an admirable unwillingness to make even the smallest change. Unless Sunderland are planning to bring in serious reinforcements, they're going to collapse by April.

Anyone disappointed over O'Neill choosing to sell Meyler should remember this is the guy who flogged Gary Cahill to Bolton when everyone could tell he was going to be a top quality centre back. Reckon David has it in him to make Martin regret this one too.

I'm glad he's gone. He will most likely be the main man in a premiership CM come september 2013. Hopefully Brady stays until at least the end of this season as well.

Tim Cahill on loan for a couple of months is likely to be the highlight of their transfer window...

There are 6 clubs below Sunderland, it's very unlikely they will be relegated.

There's only four points between them and the relegation zone, and Southampton have a game in hand, QPR have one of the most expensive teams in the league, Newcastle have an expensive squad too and Wigan are serial survivors. And like I said, O'Neill will play the same team week-in week-out and they'll tire towards the end of the season and pick up defeats when the other teams in the relegation scrap are picking up points.

You would really think O'Neill would learn from past mistakes

I'm sure he will be open to picking up a few tips from the fantasy managers

Sunderland (last I saw) were 1/16 to be relegated.

Appeals to authority are weak, you know that. There is an observable pattern in the way O'Neill (sparingly) utilises his squads and the manner in which it contributes to his team's performance tailing off at the end of the season - it's empirically measurable, if somewhat subjective.
