The Leinster Senior Cup competition has been revived
    Tuesday, 22 December 2009 12:54

The Leinster Senior Cup competition has been revived after an absence from the domestic calendar for a number of years. The League of Ireland has accepted the invitation from the Leinster FA to compete and all twelve LOI Clubs and the two Leinster Newstalk A Championship Clubs will participate in it.

LOI Clubs are exempt until the Round of 16 (First Round) and the Newstalk A Championship Clubs will play in the Preliminary Round with 4 Intermediate and 2 Junior Clubs. The Preliminary Round will take place in early February, Rovers will enter at the First Round stage in late February with the quarter-finals in March, semi-finals in April and the Final in May.

The big question is: will LOI suspensions count in it?

I quite like regional competitions, would like to see an Irish News Cup type competition revived in the Northwest.

Might be the only thing we'll be in with a chance of winning in the near future.

Well yeah, that was the underlying theme of my post too

It's a competition we may fare well in given the strength of our second string relative to other clubs as evidenced by our U-20 championship win last year and A Championship the year before. The timing of the first round and quarter finals may also prove useful to clubs in preperation for the season.

But will clubs really take it that seriously? Seems like it'll just be the Leinster equivalent of the North West Cup or County Antrim Shield.

Or, maybe this is just another sign that the A Championship won't be taking place next season?
Have you ever won the treble?

The County Antrim Shield is a very historic competition. And again, nobody has to enter if they don't want to.

Its always nice to do well in it.. I know around eleven years ago we had a great run in it thanks to Stephen Kenny.. It would be nice to play the likes of Tullamore Town and FC Carlow-another new ground to visit!!
Gary Cronin is he the right man to manage Longford Town?

That was kind of my point. Clubs won't take it too seriously but it'll provide something with slightly more edge than a friendly to prepare for the season ahead.

I don't really see why you draw that conclusion.

I'm still don't see how we're going jump the A Championship and just get straight into the First Division. A Championship sides would be going mad. So, and I'm guessing here, there won't be an A Championship next season.

The teams in the first round are all from the Dublin area - Tolka Rovers, Crumlin, Wayside etc. Would this whole thing not work better if junior teams from Meath, Westmeath, Offaly, were included? It looks more the Dublin Senior Cup.

Don't see how having poorer teams in it would help. The teams are there on merit, should be the only deciding factor IMO
