    Camcorder

    have to get the wife one for xmas and might as well be looking for a needle in a haystack,can anyone recommend any make/models

    Firstly, I would never have thought you were married.

    Secondly, I would recommend the Sony DCR-HC 62. Nice interface, can take a card for photos, easy to use. I fear that they may be no longer made, as I think that they are moving towards cards rather than tape.

    Is it just for family memories or is it for something more serious? In this day and age the mid-market digital compacts have as good video sensors as standalone camcorders just a few years ago; my DMC-TZ7 shoots in HD, for example. Of course if you need the swivelly screen and all that jazz, it wouldn't be suitable.

    secondly thanks for the info,its just what i'm looking for and it also leads me on to another question,do they all still use tapes???its been 10 years since i last bought one

    God no, most write to digital formats these days: DVD, hard disk, etc.
