Secondly, I would recommend the Sony DCR-HC 62. Nice interface, can take a card for photos, easy to use. I fear that they may be no longer made, as I think that they are moving towards cards rather than tape.

In this day and age the mid-market digital compacts have as good video sensors as standalone camcorders just a few years ago; my DMC-TZ7 shoots in HD, for example. God no, most write to digital formats these days: DVD, hard disk, etc.
