Vikings all square with Kerley's side after highly successful stay at NCTC

    14th March '04

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DUBLIN CITY FC continued their unbeaten preseason build-up with a 1-1 draw at a blustery University of Limerick where Mike Kerley's eircom League first division local side were the opposition.

The Vikings were winding up a busy weekend schedule at the National Coaching and Training Centre after an intensive couple of days of fitness evaluation. The City squad were subjected to a gruelling two days of physical checks which included body fat analysis and a demanding `beep-test'.

With City able to avail of the top class facilities at the NCTC, manager John Gill was given a rare treat of being able to work with his squad for a sustained period of time on back-to-back days.

The physical demands placed on the squad was showing a little in Sunday afternoon's game as they fell behind after just three minutes of action. The goal was of a comical variety as 'keeper Robbie Horgan attempted to head clear but mis-timed his jump at Ben Whelehan's back pass as the ball found its way to the back of the net.

The first half, in fairness, was fairly forgettable from a Dublin City point of view as Limerick played the more constructive football and the interval whistle was a welcome relief for John Gill's men.

The second period proved a complete contrast and what didn't work in the first half was now coming off as City finally found their rhythm and started to pass the ball with a lot more purpose and accuracy.

Gary O'Neill had been unlucky to see his shot come back off the butt of the upright just after the restart as City moved up a gear. Still, the Dubs had to wait until the 75th minute before restoring parity but it was an excellent effort. Interval substitute Thomas McGauley - making a return after a long lay-off -showed his prowess from dead-ball situations was still as effective as ever as he finished Cottsie O'Connor's well flighted corner to the back of the net with a powerful header.

Robbie Collins could have stolen the game late on with a couple of chances, but for City the real success of the weekend had already been achieved.

With shooting practice, tactics and set pieces all boxed off over the duration of the stay in Limerick, the Vikings are well on the way to fine tuning their Premiership set-up for the kick-off to the season.

Dublin City: Robbie Horgan, Barry Burke, Wes Byrne, Ben Whelehan, Derek Griffin, Paul Crowley, Dom Tierney, Cathal O'Connor, Robbie Farrell, Gary O'Neill. Subs: Thomas McGauley (for Griffin), Robbie Collins (for O'Neill), Keith Foy (for O'Connor), Terry Gleeson (for Tierney), Keith Maher (for Ray Scully). Not used: Brendan Kennedy (G/k).

Good result for Limerick in their first game. Any news from anyone on who played for us?

The report sounds like a bit of gloss from DC. Still it says Limerick played constructively, which from an opposition website is a big compliment.
