when he was introducing the band to the audience the first night he said,
mel gaynor and he is from cork,on the second night he said mel gaynor and he is from galway.the crowd didnt mind and just keptr going mental.

actually now that i think of it they had to stop the gig on the first night for about 5 mins because of a fight at the front of the stage.

    Favourite All-time group/artist: The Clash

    Best album...EVER: The Undertones- Hypnotised

Best Album post-2000:The Strokes- Is This It

Best song post-2000:Sugababes- Freak Like Me or Doves-There Goes the Fear

    Most-hated group/artist: Westlife

Most over-rated group/artist (why? in 30 words or less): U2, I like some of their stuff but they're not as great as some people think they are.

Album in your collection that might raise a few eyebrows: ABBA- Greatest Hits. They were Perfect Pop like the Undertones and the Beatles. Nothing like a good tune.

I know this thread is all about personal choice, but i cant for the life of me understand how people can say stuff like that about one of the greatest bands of all time. Fair enough they might not be the most talented indviduals but as a group they are absolutey outstanding. Every ablum they have had has at least 5 or 6 top tunes, every album they have had has sounded different. Not many bands can change there musical style to keep with the times - for me, the sign of a truely great band.

How can a band that have such tunes as:

    With or without you
    One
    Boy
    Sunday bloody Sunday
    New Year's Day
    Angel Of Harlem
Pride (In The Name Of Love)
    Beautiful Day
    Desire
    Elevation
    Staring At The Sun
    All I Want Is You
    Walk On
etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.......

be over-rated ? Only great bands from this side of the pond can crack the states, name me one that has done it a successful as Us in the past 15/20 years ?

    Favourite All-time group/artist: radiohead

    Best album...EVER: kid a (radiohead)

Best Album post-2000: kid a (radiohead)

Best song pre-2000: pink floyd - one of my turns/pigs (3 little ones) or zepplin - ramble on

Best song post-2000: pyramid song (radiohead)

    Most-hated group/artist: busted/stereophonics.

Most over-rated group/artist (why? in 30 words or less): the darkness - their music is nothing that hasnt been done before. by better bands. and his voice is very irritating.

Album in your collection that might raise a few eyebrows:

none really springs to mind. although agaetis byrjun by sigur ros would probably raise a few eyebrows as its not that widely known.....

I didn't say they weren't a good band but they're not a great band as Eamonn Dunphy would say. They're too much of a stadium rock band for my liking and Bono's messiah complex is a bit of a turn-off. While I do like New Years Day which is on of my favourites, I thought One was a like a bad Bridge Over Trouble Water.

A lot of the time U2 sound like a second rate SLF. I prefer no-nonsense bands like early Who, the Clash, the Undertones, SLF, Green Day and Blur. There's nothing like a good three minute power pop song played with balls. A lot of people in Ireland have a blind spot regarding U2, that's all.

And judging from dollarsandcents above, some people have an even bigger blind spot for Radiohead. In my opinion (it's all about opinions you see!) they peaked with the admitedly brilliant 'The Bends' and their last two (or three I forget which) have been poop.

Best album...EVER: Blood Sugar Sex Magik by the chilis

Best Album post-2000: Rage Against The Machine, Live at the Grand olympic Auditorium

Best song pre-2000: give it away, the chilis

Best song post-2000: Cochise by audioslave

    Most-hated group/artist: Oooohhhh.... u2. Bono's an a$$hole

Most over-rated group/artist (why? in 30 words or less):

I don;t honestly see the point of the nickelback's existence

Album in your collection that might raise a few eyebrows: Madonna's I'm breathless (to defend myself... my mum bought it for me cause it's the Dick Tracey soundtrack and she thought i liked the film)
Whatever it was I am sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman around here?

agree, where I don't mind everything after 84 I wouldn't call it ground breaking, but everything from 79-84 is mindblowing and all the samples that have been used by others would shock most.

Agreed but I think it's over-rated. It's not as good as 'The Bends', nor is anything that they've managed since => they peaked with 'The Bends'. I've never actually bought 'Ok Computer' and everything since is... not my cup of tea...

Favourite All-time group/artist: The Byrds followed by Moby Grape & XTC

Best album...EVER: Younger than Yesterday by the Byrds

Best Album post-2000: Yoshimi battles the Pink Robots by the Flaming Lips or The Corals debut album

Best song pre-2000: How can you choose that one! Grass by XTC or Loveshack by the B52's

Best song post-2000: A drop in Time by Mercury Rev

Most-hated group/artist: virtually every single group for the last 10 years. especially boybands . MTV has a lot to answer for.

Most over-rated group/artist (why? in 30 words or less): well a lot of people seem to like The Stone Roses here. What a load of twaddle. How can you tell one Stone Roses track from another? im sure they couldnt - unless they were the Stoned Roses!

Album in your collection that might raise a few eyebrows:
The Gilded Palace of Sin by the Flying Burrito Brothers. The greatest country rock album ever. A film about their lead singer Gram Parsons (who died of a drug overdose) is due to be released soon. The Film focuses on the events surrounding the kidnapping of his dead body. Tracks Sin City and My Uncle - awesome

Never thought I'd see the Flying burrito brothers discussed here (or anywhere else for that matter). brilliant, brilliant band.

don't know about the Parsons' film though, Johnny Knoxville is in it! Should be a good soundtrack if nothing else.
