Sligo-Leitrim League side beaten in quarter-final
The quarter final of the Oscar Traynor between the Sligo Leitrim & D.S.L. and the Clare League took place in glorious sunshine at the Ray Mac Sharry Complex on Sunday. Referee Tommy Cormican and his assistance Frank Daly and Declan Toland from Roscommon took charge of this encounter and proceedings were overseen by FAI Junior Council key committee member John Sherlock.
The game started at a very fast pace with both sides looking extremely sharp home side Captain Gary Rooney and Clare’s Con Collins had a battle royal in the middle of the park and Clare were pressing hard insuring the rearguard of Sligo Leitrim were working overtime. On twenty five minutes Clare’s Eoin O Brien seen a great free kick cleared by Captain fantastic Gary Rooney five minutes later and Sligo Leitrim’s keeper Tony Clarke saved brilliantly from the feet of Derek Fahy.
The first half was nip and tuck with the Clare League having the better share of the spoils but despite both sides endeavours the game remained scoreless.
Nine minutes into the second half and Clare’s towering defender Richie Lillis pulled down Keith Nibbs in the penalty area. The referee Tommy Cormican immediately pointed to the spot and Nibbs himself dispatched the ball past John Healy in the Clare goals. The celebrations lasted all of eight minutes when Dave McCarthy netted the equaliser for the visitors and once again it was all square.
Sligo Leitrim was now pressing hard and with ten minutes remaining Gareth Kelly was just inches wide of the Clare goal but after ninety minutes it was all square and the game headed into extra time. Andrew McLoughlin gave away a needless free kick on the edge of the Sligo penalty area five minutes into extra time Eoin O Brien seen his effort smashed of the defence wall and that was about as close as any side came to a scoring opportunity in the first half period.
Minutes into the second half Sligo Leitrim’s Damien Scanlon had his effort on the Clare goal stopped on the goal line by Clare’s Eamon O Reilly and at this stage penalty’s seemed to be the only way that this tie would produce a winner and so it came to pass.
The final result seen the home side / visitors emerge victors in a dramatic climax that seen the keepers play a hero roles. First up was Clares Daryl Eade against Tony Kelly in the Sligo Leitrim goals and what a save he made. Then Gino O Boyle was next against John Healy who also made a great safe. David Russell was next against Kelly and Clare were one up. Neal Mc Kenna then levelled it and Eamon O Reilly put Clare ahead once more, Patrick Callaghan was next for the home side and he planted the spot kick all square next Mattie Nugent for Clare and once again back of the net. The tension was unbearable when John Gaffney netted and then the last two were on the spot Con Collins fired home for Clare with the last man Keith Nibbs scoring for Sligo Leitrim now it was sudden death. Eoin O Brien banged home his spot kick and up stepped Lee Marshall to save the day for Sligo Leitrim but his shot was high and wide and Clare went progress to the Semi Finals in a cracking encounter.

The premier league will be done and dusted come this sunday with victory in newmarket and then its roll on the double! Also congrats to the Oscar traynor team and management.
Dont be fooled by avenue 1990, hes not even a club man. we here at avenue give everybody we play the respect they deserve. newmarket are a very decent team and will be very tough to beat sunday. i d also like to say that the cup could go to any 1 of the teams left in it, so to say we ll win it at this stage is stupid really. was talking to our management and they wanted to say that they treat every team with respect. hopefully nobody here falls for avenue 1990s tricks to wind newmarket up
[You are back Mastermind?? And such an evangelical attitude!![]()
