    Sean Connor

    Hi

It's been reported in local press over here that Sean Connor has been interviewed for the vacant managers job at Greenock Morton (Scottish First Division) http://www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk/s...or-morton-job/. I was wondering how highly rated he is by you guys and what we should expect if he gets the job.

    Cheers

    Stu

I would have thought Joe Miller would have got there ahead of Sean. He is on the market at the present minute like! All in all Connor is on a 1 year rolling contract so if he where to get it, its a nice time to be considered as theres only two weeks left!

Seriously, opinion is divided on him. He took us up from the 1st Division in '05, but his detractors will say he could hardly not have done so, as his budget was by far the biggest in the division.

At Bohs, most of the players that won the double last season were signed by him the previous season. They also finished several places higher in the table under Connor in '07 than the previous year. His opponents will say that he didn't get enough out of the talent he did have (as Fenlon did in '08) and that some of the players were very unfit.

His training regime has also been highly criticised as too lax. Dundalk's disciplinary record this season has been abysmal. Having said that, his stated goal this season was to keep Dundalk in the Premier, which he has done.

Make of all that what you will. Personally, slagging aside, I think he's done a decent job at Dundalk.

A one year rolling contract means there is always 12 months left on it, isn't it?
Would Dundalk be due 12 months salary as compensation? (If Morton were able to pay it). Could be a nice windfall.
Hunky Dorys Park - could be worse, we could be going to Old Trafford every other week

    Overall a fairly balanced assessment.

Perhaps slightly understating both his achievements and his drawbacks!

Apart from getting Sligo promoted in his first season, Connor went on to assemble an almost completely new squad for the following season and took Sligo to a top four finish.

At Bohs he completely overhauled the squad and took them from 3rd from bottom finish to 3rd from top the following season. He also laid the foundations stones at Bohs that culminated in a double under Pat Fenlon the following year.

Again at Dundalk this season, he has put together a completely new squad (only 3 remain from last years promotion-winning team) and his success in securing the current 5th place is ahead of target and expectations.

While he won his case for unfair dismissal from Bohs the range and depth of charges that were levelled against him indicate that, as a minimum, he is a difficult character to control and has the ability to antagonise colleagues, club management, the media and supporters. This extends beyond the anti-Connor rhetoric to be expected from fans of former clubs Sligo and Bohs. Some of the issues that were highlighted during his acrimonious departure from Bohs, such as running up unauthorised bills, have re-surfaced at Dundalk.

For a person with a background in P.R. his media handling is often ill-considered and counter-productive, and he is prone to be volatile.

While his on-pitch managerial record is good results-wise, the off-field managerial issues and his personality and attitude leave something to be desired.

My guess is that Dundalk will offer him an extension on his contract, which if proved correct, will indicate that they accept that the positives outweigh the negatives. That the board do not appear to have done so to date is probably indicative of the divided opinion that Sean Connor seems to arouse.

A sock salesman turned PR man who blagged his way into football management and thinks everyone is out to get him. You have listened to him being interviewed right?

I think it was actually 6th place that we finished in '06. Definitely wasn't 4th.

That seems to be a pretty good summary of him, though. It's a pity that he seems to bring so much baggage with him, as in terms of results alone his CV would appear to be quite impressive.

Did he tell them that he once played for Cliftonville?

He does "sell" himself well at interview though......

If he gets some money, and the club has ambitions, he may actually be able to do something - you will all, within a year or two, have cause to hate him.

Just spotted Ezeikial's post above - 2 cheers from the club he currently manages will illustrate the unease he tend to provoke even when doing well.
