Lightbulb The Big Fat Recession-Busting Thread

Right, I was going to recommend the cheap contact lenses I got but decided it might be even better if we had a thread we could all post bargains, deals, and tips for saving money in.

For example contact lenses cost me €35/month from Specsavers. Thanks to Day Soft Lenses I have just received 2 months supply for €23.96 including delivery. A 6 month supply in Specsavers costs €180- online, they work out at €71.88. They arrived inside a week and I have noticed no difference in quality.

I'm sure people knew about sites like this already but I'm equally sure there must be other like me who've been getting screwed for ages on them.

Secondly, if you go to the cinema more than twice a month (and you're based in Dublin), the Cineworld unlimited ticket is €19.99 (or £13.50/month if you have an Irish bank account). As someone who goes to the cinema 4-5 times a month, that's €30 saved a month, plus I can go as much as I want.

Anyone else got any tips to offer?

Have started using hotwire.com to book hotels. When used in association with betterbidding.com you can identify about 90%+ of the hotels its recommending at fairly sizeable chunks off rates available elsewhere.

    Two recent examples:
    1) Sheraton at Heathrow. £140 a night on expedia etc. £50 on Hotwire.
    2) Westin in the US. $480 a night on expedia. $87 on Hotwire.

If you're buying a laptop, ask for an ex-display model. That knocks off a few quid. And if you're on mobile broadband like me, just find a bar with wi-fi and that saves on the allowance...

Great value lunch if you're in the Camden Street area. Fresh do a promotion at the moment where you get a roll, a cup of tea and a bar of Lindt for a fiver.

Instead of wasting money paying expensive hookers, why not just kill them?

This tip mostly applies to truck drivers of course.
