I hate to go on about it, but the Panny DMC-TZ7 is very good for this too, way quicker than it's predecessor; and it has a damn good zoom too. It's only real failing is low-light situations, which is pretty much a given in most compacts anyway.

It's not as fast as it's predecessor, the TZ6, and the marginal differences between the two still mean the TZ6 is better value unless you want the HD video.

Both still suffer shutter lag as do all comapact/P&S

    Can't comment on the TZ6, went straight from a lost TZ5 to a TZ7.

Don't think he's going to get anything decent non-P&S for 200 bucks.

The other I'm considering is the Canon 450D. There's a decent offer on it and accessories on http://www.currys.co.uk.

Now to decide which.Having seen some wonderful images in the Photo Thread I have a different perspective now. Everything I've pretty much shot to date is static and safe. I want to try action, nighttime and distant shooting.

Your thoughts or if you know of any reviews of either going?

The Canon 450D is one of the best on the market for the Pro, if you're starting out I'd recomend the fuji finepix s9600 the perfect half-way between P-n-C and DSlr at a fraction of the price

Went for the Canon 500D in the end and still getting the hang of it. There are some pictures taken by it in the Photo Thread in Off Topic. Some more to add as I was out last night in the snow and got a few decent pic's.

Have got the following shortlist all 12mp
    Kodak €79 Argus
    Fuji €99 Currys
    Sony €119 Currrys

Was going to go for the Sony until I seen the Kodak advertised in Argus sale, looks good 3.0 screen etc just wondering if there is a catch when its for sale for so low.

Thinking of getting a new camera soon, would I be better waiting til after Christmas for a sale or do cameras generally stay around the same price anyway?

the lower spec ones tend to come down in price to make space for any newer models
