Ya, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Newspapers have a way of putting a spin on an innocuous interview. The Gibson one springs to mind. He's been struggling to finish games all season so its fair enough. Rookie mistake telling Trap that he was tired, but he shouldn't have to make up an injury either.

I doubt if the Herald pays its 10p/day sub to PNE
Looks more like the Herald story is a mix and match of ripping off bits from various other media outlets, including

    Mirror
    Sky Sports

might be unrelated but it's interesting to note that Treacy has only completed 90 minutes for Preston five times this season, and the last one was almost a month ago. He's been substituted 6 times since and was the most substituted player in September: http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/Play...5&seasonID=140

Conflicting reports. But IF (big if) those are accurate quotes then he may find himself grounded for a few months like Wilson, McCarthy et al. Trap hates squad pull-outs almost as much as he hates Byron Moreno...

Different take on Treacy pulling out on soccerrepublic: http://soccerrepublic.eircom.net/New...ntfortrap.aspx
Trapattoni, who is also without Preston's Keith Treacy due to a persistent calf problem, has not called up any midfield reinforcements.

Treacy, who was on standby, did not travel, with Preston insisting he needs rest to get over a long-standing problem.

Trapattoni would have included the player had it not been for Preston's insistence that he needed to stay in Lancashire.

In Italy, Treacy would have been expected to report and be assessed by medical staff, but Trapattoni has accepted Preston manager Darren Ferguson's decision to keep him close to home.

Trapattoni said: "They said he is injured. He can play, but he needs rest. They wanted to rest him so he could recover.

"Always after one hour, he is in pain in his groin and they think it is better he stays at home.

"After the last game, he played 60 minutes, he felt it and we hope with this rest, he gets better.

"In Italy, we have other habits. If a player is injured, our doctor speaks with their doctor, he comes in and then he goes home. In Italy, players always come.

"It's not a problem of believe or not believe. I am not a doctor."

Treacy has been battling his injury for some time and has been unable to play for his club on a sustained basis.

Trapattoni said: "He can play 20 minutes and he has pain in his groin. He plays 20 minutes, 60 minutes, but then he is not fit so it is not possible to come with us.

This is direct quotes as produced by breakingnews.ie, dare I say it, alot more reliable than the Herald. Make of this what you will, not as bad as some are making out above, although Trap doesnt appear entirely happy with it judging by the comments below that he should have at least travelled over to see the Irish doctor etc.

It would appear from those in the press who were there at the press conference, that Trap was not at all happy with the manner of Treacy pulling out - hiding behind the apron of his club.

Perhaps a bit of a storm in a tea-cup. He probably would not have got on the pitch anyway?
Better he gets himself fully fit?

Might well be so, but apparently real character is defined as turning up for duty and being shattered to be told by the doc that you can't play. Italians like to witness all the drama as it unfolds.

He has a persistent problem fair enough he has been substitued in all of his recent games, but he did play in the league cup recently which is a bit strange.

He is more commited to his club but in fairness most guys on the fringes of the ireland squad probably are,I saw an interview with Joe Murphy saying as much recently, so it shouldnt rule him out in future.

You can't impose a commitment. I suppose it's fair enough if some value their club career higher now and later on who knows. But the priority now goes to the type of players who voluntarily turn up in their wheelchairs, crutches or having icepacks strapped to their knees for days.

Aye. He was very quick to bring that up. Though I'm more on Treacy's side now after his criticism due to his grade a toolism.
I think that this really is a storm in a tea cup and it should die off come Friday.

So it seems more than possible that Treacy and McCarthy will not find themselves in the squad for the rest of the time that Trap is manager? I think it is fair to say he does not seem to go back on his thoughts, and that he thinks these two have shirked some responsibility?

It's possible a lot of people will never be called up under Trap but in McCarthy's case it's almost certain he will be called up in November and it's improbable that Treacy will be frozen out for too long.

Do you selectively ignore the posts quoting Trap about McCarthy's absence & pointing out his likely inclusion in November?

Given the fallouts between Don Givens and players during his U21 reign I'd be keeping a low profile rather than continuing to criticise. Reel your neck in.

the comments come from an interview he gave with the Hold The Back Page podcast: http://backpagefootball.com/featured...ge-episode-11/
Interview with Givens starts on the 11 minute mark, the comments on Treacy are just after the 23 minute mark

Mentions that he's going to watch Hogan Ephraim as well next week for QPR against Norwich
