Garrafauns played for a couple of seasons in the mayo league.
You cant get land these days for love or money, yet all these other clubs seemed to exist with a pitch. Does anyone have any Idea where some of these teams played. Im sure Most where just Farmers Fields and have reverted back again but it would be interesting to know? I remember Ballyhaunis, Knock, Manulla, and even ballyheane with Field type pitches! Mind you thats still the case in most Connaught clubs today![]()
does antone remember the roadstone pitch 23/25 years ago
Ballyheane had 3 pitches at different times
they trained at the back of the punch bowl
1 pitch was up by the handball alley
another was was just past there new ground and take the next left
both were fields but did the job
Its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it
lads also add roundfort. jesus still have lumps in my legs after game up there![]()
there were quay hearts, textiles, sporting club, crusaders and westport utd all playing in westport between 60s ,70s and early 80s
Played for Shrule in the late 70s early 80s. Long time ago but I remember a fellow called Frank Heneghan played centre half. Also a guy called Jimmy Kelleghan, a striker, who scored a hat-trick on a pitch on the beach in Achill. I also remember Balla had a team with an absolutely brialliant goalkeeper. what was his name? Pitches and dressing rooms were very basic in them days. Thank god things have improved. Hats off to the Mayo League officials!!! By the way I also played in the Mayo league in 2006.

Achill Rovers FDAC is an amalgamation of 2 teams: Achill Eagles and Achill United joined together in '86 when there was a huge decline in population in Achill, wish we kept the Eagles name, way better..
the roundfort utd club fell by the wayside after a couple of the lads that were running the club died (accident\health problems). some lads went back playing with ballinrobe, claremorris and back to gaa. was'nt all hollymount there was lads from garrymore and a few under the carpet illegals as well![]()
It has probably been the worst year for called off fixtures. Not that the past few years have been much better. The gaps between games have been horrendous. The majority of these have been due to unavoidable circumstances. However the connaught and Fai cups take precedent over junior league fixtures at the end of the season causing the most important time of the year to be put on hold. Would it not now be more appropriate to start the league the first week of March and have most elements tied up before the external cups begin. That way clubs who want to can concentrate on that aspect while lower leagues are not effected? Games should be constant and regular like any normal league!
