Already this season at a Premier match a referee standing on the sideline watching the game was given abuse because the ref actually reffing the game made a few bad calls. The abuse the refs have to put up with is unreal and no money is worth it.

I've just been reading through this.

The referees fee is made up of two things

    A match fee - €24
An Urban Allowance of €18 or if the round trips is greater than 25 miles, 72c per mile.

In Dublin the trip always starts from the GPO.

The match fee is for time traveling to and from the match, refereeing the match, etc

The allowance is for out of pocket expences, petrol, insurance, car tax etc. Similar to what I get if I'm call in work and have to leave the office.

It normally takes me between 3.5 - 4.5 hours between leaving the house and getting home. So that works out at €5.33 to €6.85 per hour for the match fee.
    Smile........ it confuses people

Great post hacker,it's not for the money for the vast majority of refs I've met, there'd be a que of people waiting to do the refs courses it that was the case.We need younger, fitter men to get involved in the game also, but the level of abuse is a serious deterrent to younger guys as they might know some of the players of their own age group.

Referees jobs are tough but like all jobs should rewarded by performances. If a ref is doing well then reward him with a pay rise. This will make the standard of reffing better. Abviously everyone would like a pay rise so this will encourage all to better themselves. For this to happen a referees asseser would have to be appointed.

Ya these are the ones i would have said aswell. One of them turned up to a match i was at on sunday and he wasn't even down to ref it. He had to speed off to the game he should have been at. And they want more money????

There are 2 FAI assessors, Paddy Collins and Tony Ryan.

Referees are rewarded for performances, they do Premier and 1A matches.

Some referees never get to referee this level
Its easy to shout abuse at the ref - how would you like it if he did it back?

without referees there would be no football going on so lets be thankful we have them available good or bad ones, its the taking part that counts and enjoyment it brings the guy in the middle just tries to call it fairly give them a break, if anything they deserve awards for the abuse they put up with, i read somewhere someone posted some clubs cant afford to pay fees, are you suggesting smaller fees for "smaller clubs" and bigger fees for clubs who CHARGE to watch games wich is a disgrace altogether

2 assesors for over 30 games going on at junior level and god knows how many schoolboy and youth games, seems pointless.

grade 1 refs qualify by time spent in the society as much as standard so to be fair saying they never get to this level is inaccurate.

more assesors are needed and a grading system that doesn't just reward refs but over time can be used to pull refs from junior matches, some of these guys are obviously not capable of dealing with commited players and agitated sidelines.

What happened with the strike anyway? We had to travel to Shannon yesterday even though we were told by the opposition that the pitch was off on Saturday when did that rule change that the home team cant call the match off? the players could have had a lie on or a night out on Saturday its crazy. I think this is to make sure a referee gets some money every week is this right?
