Surprising Peter Hutton hasn't been mentioned yet. One of the only heroes playing at the moment.
I'm a 23yr old right-handed heterosexual who drinks milk and likes democracy. - dcfcsteve knows me well
A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.
Robbie Dunne and Paul Marney for me. They were hard working, would feed off the energy of the fans and 100% committed to the team but not particularly great players - everything a cult hero should be!
Stenny and Fago - with the Bit o' Red from the Cretaceous era to the mid-1980s.
From other teams, the great McConville-Keely-Dunning-Lawlor axis of evil
"Even if the wind stops to blow
Even if the sea ceases to flow
Even if the sun ceases to rise
The name of Sligo Rovers will shine and shine forever like the morning star glittering in the sky."
Dermot Keely at Dundalk - with his gunslinger gait, and his unfliching determination to chop down anyone foolish enough to try to go past him.
Three red cards in four games (i think) ensured his cult status could not be undone by his subsequent managerial daliances with almost every LoI club.
Owen DaGama and Nelson daSilva for the sheer skill and razzmatazz when Derry joined the league and were playing in the first division and having crowds of 8-9000 at every home game. Them days were magic and these two players stand out for me.
Danny Ventre, Paul McTiernan, Ian Wexler, Gareth Gorman

So many legends already and not around ten years yet and I didn't even mention Barry Clancy![]()
For Wexford Youths I suppose the early cult heroes would be Paul "Patsy" Malone, he's not the most talented player in the world but he tries his heart out every game and loves a crunching challenge "Patsy's gonna get ya" is a fans favourite chant.
Liam "Locky the flying winger" O'Loughlin would be another one, left the squad to travel to the US to get his pilots licence last year, before returning this season, has now returned to junior football along with quite a few other senior squad players.

Your man who gos down O'Connell street steamboats roaring at young girls deserves an honourable mention also.
I almost forgot about Road Runner, any man who freely defecates on a public street is a legend in my book.

Dean Barrett and Ger Robinson
and these few others too:
Phillip Gorman
Darren Stapleton
Baba Isaaka
Alan Byrne
and Barry Clancy made an unforgivable mistake that cost us the game against Bray in the FAI Cup replay one year so he ain't a cult hero more of a cult villian, plus he ran off crying to Monaghan
