Not a hotel, but this place was spot on last time we played there. About 15 minute walk from main sq/train station. Very reasonably priced & very clean (much better than some hotels I've stayed in!!). All size of rooms, we had an 8 man dorm for our group but I think they have twins, quads etc.... Would definitely recommend it.

PS: They'll be loads of Irish there as well!!!

    Swiss U-21 Game

For anyone who is interested, the Swiss FA have announced that the U-21 game will be played in Berne's Neufeld stadion.

Neufeld is only the temporary home of Young Boys Berne, it looks a bit like Santry Stadium - running track around it too.

Bummer. I was hoping for Neuchatel - to meet up with my ganja smoking, Che Guevara worshiping ultra friends again - or Lausanne perhaps. Still, allows me to stay in a hotel named after a famous Kilburn Irish nitespot which is now a temple to Pentecostalism (do these brothers and sisters know of the drunken hedonism and papal idolatry that went on that place before), which unfortunately I was, slung out of on account of a broken door and a earlier brawl between two roommates that made the place look like the bathroom in the film 'Scarface.'

I've got more chance of getting into The National, Berne than The National, Kil-berne these days, although the sacking of the bloke who used to run the 'happy daze' sermons, as featured recently on the cover of The Voice for his extra-curricular activities, might make it a bit easier.

For those who still had doubts, it's now official that the game will be in Basel.

    Volltreffer, welcome back!!!

Won't make it to Basel for this one I'm afraid, though I'm hopeful we can improve on our last result over there.

Best of luck in Portugal - are you heading over??

    Hi Junior!

    Volltreffer, welcome back!!!
    Thanks!

... though I'm hopeful we can improve on our last result over there.
I'm hopeful you can't, though Switzerland are not playing well at the moment. Their next "friendly" game will be against Germany (in Basel) on June 2 - the game is sold out.

Best of luck in Portugal - are you heading over??
    No.

In case you want to do some betting again, Basel are busy reinforcing their team for the CL qualification.

I'll wait and see how much 'reinforcing' Celtic do in the summer before I decide which team I want to lose my money on!!!!

How is Streller doing these days, not kept up to date on him since our game last year??

Streller and Yakin (Hakan) are both playing for Stuttgart now (that's why we're reinforcing the team).

Streller gets to play regularly, though not the whole 90 minutes. He's scored 3 goals so far.

Yakin hasn 't played much, Magath is trying to make a long-distance runner out of him first ... Right now Hakan is suffering from some minor injury, I hope he will be able to play against Germany.

    Swiss

Just to reaffirm what I told you:

Die U-21-Equipe absolviert ihre Partie gegen Irland am 7. September im Berner Neufeld. Die Färöer stellen dagegen keine U-21-Mannschaft.

From Berne to Basle is about 1 to 1.5 hours by train.

What Volltreffer isn't telling you though is how Basel are crumbling, and how FC Zürich inflicted their first defeat on St. Patrick's Day.

Just like Grasshoppers, the self belief at Basel is ebbing away....

Without a couple of their stars, they start to look quite ordinary.

    Nichts für ungut, Volltreffer, gäll

You're right, 3 defeats ouf of 36 games are extremely demoralizing. What a pity the transfer champion doesn't qualify for any international competition ...

What do we care about old stars (who don't want to play for us) when we can get new ones - or have old ones coming back (Ergic )?

    Congratulations (honest)!

I think we should leave it at that, considering this thread is called "Switzerland away".

    Flights

Booked flights out to Basel/Mulhouse airport for 223 euro inc. taxes from Dublin (via Stansted).

Flying out on the Monday back on the Friday will cost less, about 180 euro.

Ryanair out to Stansted costs 60 odd euro per head return
EasyJet from Stansted to Basel costs about 160 euro return.

It's quite possible to do it v. v. cheaply if you go via Berlin Schopenfeld airport, but that would involve another hop I think.

Swiss striker Marco Streller will miss the finals of UEFA EURO 2004™ after he sustained a broken leg in training on Sunday morning.

    Training collision
The 22-year-old was carried off on a stretcher after a collision with FC Basel defender Marco Zwyssig at Switzerland's training camp in Freienbach. He was taken to hospital for a scan, where it was confirmed that he had broken his shin and his fibula.

    Support striker
Streller would have been likely to occupy the support striker's role in Portugal, behind Alexander Frei and Stéphane Chapuisat and his physical presence would have made him a valuable addition to Jakob Kuhn's squad.

    Finals chance
With Streller ruled out of the finals, Servette FC Léonard Thurre and Milaim Rama of FC Thun are both likely to travel to Portugal. Kuhn may also look to the U21 squad for Streller's replacement, with Johan Vonlanthen or Davide Chiumiento in contention to step up to the senior squad.

    Warm-up dates
Switzerland play Germany in a warm-up friendly on Wednesday before Kuhn names his final squad for EURO 2004™. The final 23 players will then take on neighbours Liechtenstein on 6 June in their last warm-up match.

Better get a move on if you haven't booked your hotel yet for Basel. Difficult to get one in the centre. I've got the Central hotel - 3 Star for €105 per room per night - expensive enough but they all appear to be and I'm caught for time having to fly to Dusseldorf, checkin and then dash off to berne for the U21 game.

Just google hotels in Basel or discount etc etc

We got a pretty good deal in the 5 star Swissotel (I've never stayed in a 5 star hotel before. Is it true they leave a mint on your pillow!?). I can't remember the exact price but it comes to about €70 each a night for a twin room. If anyone tries there and they are booked up I stayed in the Hotel du Commerce the last time. Even though this is a 3 star hotel I think it was about €70 a night, again based on 2 people sharing. It's well located with it only being a quick tram ride into the city centre.
